  • the fasteners 18 are not controlled by detectors, their rest position is detected by a detector which will be described later.
  • the actuating arm 30, as seen in FIG. 2 is engaged in the guide path 28 and the teeth 34 of the toothed sector clutch 32 do not mesh with the teeth 38 of the wheel 36.
  • the sheet rear edge attachment 50 is open and released from the surface of the drum 14.
  • An optical detector 41 of the rear edge of the sheet shown in FIG. 3 detects the passage of the rear edge of the sheet, through the opening 43 formed in the paper tray 10, and actuates a chronology unit 45 which sends a signal to the drum drive control logic (not shown) to drive the drum 14 for a specified period of time and distance to allow the entire length of the sheet 12 to be pulled over the surface of the drum 14.
  • the chronology unit 45 also de-energizes the solenoid 31 to allow the curved actuating arm 30 to leave the guide path 28 and to control the mechanical operations which will be described below.
  • the detectors used in the present invention could be pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or a combination of these various types.
  • a mechanical clutch operation takes place simultaneously with the mechanical movements described above.
  • the lever 35 of the toothed sector clutch 32 is released from the curved actuating arm 30 and the toothed sector is pulled towards the wheel 36 by the spring 39 in order to cause the gearing of the teeth. 34 and 38.
