  • This invention relates to an electrical connector, and particularly to an electrical connector for terminating a coaxial electrical cable of the type comprising a centre conductor arranged within a tubular outer shielding conductor and separated therefrom by a layer of dielectric material.
  • connectors are known, and an advantage of some known connectors is that they are formed of stamped and formed metal parts, thus allowing cheapness and ease of manufacture and also allowing the parts to be produced in strip form, that is a plurality of similar parts carried by a common carrier strip, this allowing application of the parts to a coaxial cable by automatic machinary.
  • One known connector comprises a centre contact member stamped and formed from sheet metal in elongate tubular form and extending from one end of a tubular dielectric material support member, for crimp connection to a bared end portion of the centre conductor of the coaxial cable, and an outer contact member stamped and formed from sheet metal and enveloping the support member with the centre contact member extending beyond one end of the outer contact member, the outer contact member having an outer-conductor-connection portion for connection to the outer conductor of the coaxial cable, extending beyond the other end of the support member remote fro;n the centre contact member, the outer-conductor-connection portion comprising a ferrule for crimping about the outer conductor of the coaxial cable.
  • such connector is characterised in that a portion of the outer contact member overlying the support member is radially resilient and is divided into a plurality of axially extending arms having their roots adjacent the end of the support member from which the centre contact member extends, the outer-conductor-connection ferrule being carried by one arm which extends beyond the other end of the support member, a further arm diametrically opposed to the one arm carrying the ferrule also extending beyond the other end of the support member, with the free end of the further arm being arranged for receipt between the outer conductor of the coaxial cable and the ferrule when crimped about the outer conductor of the coaxial cable.
  • the connector to be described is a plug type connector for terminating a coaxial electrical cable (shown in the drawings) of the type comprising a centre conductor 1 arranged coaxially within a tubular braided outer shielding conductor 2 and separated therefrom by a layer 3 of dielectric material, the outer conductor 2 being surrounded by an insulating material sheath 4.
  • the connector comprises a centre contact member 5 stamped and formed from sheet metal in elongate tubular form, and extending from one end of a tubular dielectric material support member 6.
  • the centre contact member 5 has a relatively small diameter free end portion 7 which, as best seen in Figure 2, receives a bared end portion of the centre conductor 1 of the coaxial cable, which portion 7 is subsequently crimped onto the centre conductor 1 to establish the required electrical connection.
  • the other end of the centre contact member 5 is of relatively large diameter, and is secured in a hole in the end of the support member 6 by means of projections 8 on the centre contact member 5 engaging the outer end face of the support member 6, and the inner end 9 of the centre contact member 5 being flared to engage the inner end face of the support member 6.
  • the connector also includes an outer contact member lO stamped and formed from sheet metal and enveloping the support member 6 with the centre contact member 5 extending beyond one end of the outer contact member lO.
  • the end of the outer contact member 10 adjacent the centre contact member 5 is turned in over the outer end face of the support member 6 in order to retain the support member 6 within the outer contact member 10.
  • the longitudinal free edges of the outer contact member lO where they overlie the support member 6 are formed within interengaging projection and slot means forming a dovetail joint 11 which serves to prevent the outer contact member 10 from opening along its longitudinal seam.
  • a portion of the outer contact member 10 overlying the support member 6 is divided into four circumferentially equispaced axially extending arms 12, 13, 14 and 15 having their roots adjacent the end of the support member 6 from which the centre contact member 5 extends.
  • the diametrically opposed arms 13 and 14 terminate adjacent the other end of the support member 6 remote from the centre contact member 5, and are bowed outwardly along their length thus making this portion of the outer contact member 10 radially resilient.
  • the arm 15 extends beyond the other end of the support member 6 and carries a portion for connection to the outer conductor 2 and sheath 4 of the coaxial cable, this portion comprising a first ferrule 16 for crimping about a bared portion of the outer conductor 2, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, and a second ferrule 17 for crimping about the sheath 4, as shown in Figures 4 and 6.
  • the ferrule 17 is formed with three nail holes 18 in order to provide inwardly directed sharp projections for biting into the sheath 4, as shown in Figure 6.
  • the arm 15 is also bent inwardly adjacent the ferrule 16 in order to secure the support member 6 within the outer contact member 10.
  • the remaining arm 12 diametrically opposed to the arm 15 also extends beyond the other end of the support member 6 and over the ferrule 16 but not over the ferrule 17 so that the free end of the arm 12 is arranged for receipt between the outer conductor 2 of the coaxial cable and the ferrule 16 when crimped about the outer conductor 2, as shown in Figures 4 and 5.
  • the free end of the arm 12 is formed with two inwardly directed lances 19 which when the ferrule 16 is crimped, are urged into the outer conductor 2 of the coaxial cable to establish a good electrical and mechanical connection thereto.
  • the arm 12 is also bent inwardly adjacent the ferrule 16, similarly to the arm 15, in order to secure the support member 6 within the outer contact member lO.
  • Figure 7 shows a stamped metal blank from which the outer contact member 10 of Figures 1 to 6 is formed.
  • the blank can be carried by a carrier strip 100 common to a plurality of similar blanks, whereby outer contact members 10 can be formed and applied to centre contact member and support member sub-assemblies by the use of automatic machinery.
  • the inner surface of the ferrule 16 can be embossed or otherwise roughened, as indicated at 20 in order to enhance the connection between the ferrule 16 and the outer conductor 4 of the coaxial cable.
