Abstract
The invention relates to a method and device for reducing the number of microorganisms on surfaces exposed to frequent skin contact such as door handles, buttons, railings, etc., provided that these elements can be made of materials transparent to UV radiation. Disinfection is carried out by UV-C radiation from an external emitter that penetrates through the volume of such elements from one side and exits through the surfaces that are to be disinfected. This happens as a consequence of light scattering at contact with the structure of micro-inhomogeneities formed inside the volume of the elements through a laser optical breakdown (another name for the method is subsurface laser engraving). To increase the efficiency of disinfection, a cover made of a material with the property of catalytic photodissociation can be placed on the outer surface of the elements. To comply with current safety regulations for UV radiation, the devices can be equipped with motion sensors, rotation sensors, and other sensors that operate under the control of a microprocessor and do not allow the UV emitter to be turned on when a person is nearby.
