Abstract
The present invention provides a protocol for voice message and provides a method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving a call selective message that includes a signal indicator indicative of at least one receiver and a data signal intended for the receiver. The method transmits in the first instance the signal indicator (722) and delays at predetermined time intervals. Subsequently, the method transmits (706) at least a portion of the first signal indicator and a message signal to the receiver in a first time. Therefore, the present invention provides a diversity of time for the signal indicator before the transmission of the message itself takes place. The physician may use an alert signal (i.e., a single bit) (100) indicative of a receiver as well as an address (202, 204) corresponding to the receiver. The present invention supports various types of group messages that could be used simultaneously with the transmission of individual messages by setting and transmitting additional alert signals (412, 16), direction signals (414, 418, 420), and message signals 408 (which could be interleaved and pseudo-randomly distributed within a voice information section that is part of a frame, for example). Alternate steps may be taken to transmit messages to groups of recipients. For example, for receiver groups that do not have a common address, a method may be set and independent alert bits (108) corresponding to the group receivers transmitted, set and transmitted to each address (228, 238) for each receiver included in the group, and then transmit the intended message signal for each receiver within the group.
