Abstract

Most preferably, the frusto-conical outer surface (22-1a) of the stopper rod tip forms an angle θ with the corresponding horizontal surface that is large enough to increase the velocity of the flowing molten metal in order to reduce the thickness of the boundary layer adjacent to the nozzle surfaces and the tip of the stopper rod, and minimize the deposition of inclusions on them. Preferably, the angle θ is greater than 70 ° and less than 85 °.
