The invention can be used to separate used polyester from various contaminants, including glass, dirt, paper, metal, glue, dye, and the like. The disclosed process includes several steps such as a preparation step in which a portion of the contaminants can be removed from the polyester, and a reaction step in which a portion of the polyester can be saponified and the contaminants can be physically separated from the polyester. In addition, during the reaction step, some difficult to separate contaminants, such as aluminum and PVC, may react to form a more readily separable form from the polyester.
