Abstract

A composition for treating materials contaminated with hydrocarbon compounds contains a protein component, an excipient agent and a microbial culture that can metabolize hydrocarbon contaminants. This composition is mixed with contaminated material and absorbs or adsorbs pollutants, thereby preventing their leaching into the environment. Microbial culture makes biodegradation of the pollutant possible, thus eliminating any environmental hazards associated with contaminated material. The protein material and the filler agent are preferably organic in nature, and the microbial culture can be autochthonous for the protein material. This invention also relates to a method for treating a material contaminated with hydrocarbons using the composition described above. This invention is particularly suitable for the treatment of contaminated drilling flour. The international application has been published along with an international search report.
