Description
Field of technology
The invention relates to the field of clean technologies. In particular, the invention relates to the field of reducing CO2 in the environment, capturing CO2 and storing CO2 in a stable solid product.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
There is general agreement that global climate change is occurring, and evidence shows that man-made emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere are a major cause.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that absorbs heat from solar radiation in the atmosphere. Increasing levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are being released into the atmosphere and causing global temperatures to rise as well as ocean acidification. CO2 is mainly released due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, industrial activity and deforestation, as well as natural contributions such as volcanic eruptions and biological respiration. Continued increases in atmospheric CO2 levels have led to global climate change, including higher global temperatures. As temperatures rise due to increased CO2 levels, global weather patterns change, causing stronger storms in the tropics, winds, heavy rainfall and melting ice caps leading to rising sea levels, to name a few consequences.
2.In addition, the absorption of increased levels of atmospheric CO2 by the oceans lowers pH levels, causing damage to many important marine ecosystems. Ocean acidification, for example, is affecting coral reefs throughout the tropics, and because reefs provide food for millions of people as well as millions of dollars of industry, including fishing and tourism, communities as well as natural ecosystems are highly vulnerable to the impacts of increased CO2 levels.
The consequences of global climate change, already observed as well as predicted, are very severe and have increased extensive scientific, public and political awareness, leading to global climate change efforts aimed at reducing CO2 emissions, stopping or even reversing global climate change. International policy agreements are now pushing to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low-carbon future.
In addition to limiting the amount of CO 2 released into the atmosphere, there has also been a lot of research and effort into capturing and storing CO 2 - several companies now have systems designed to directly capture carbon from the atmosphere. However, CO 2 is in most cases stored as a compressed gas and reused in industry, which ends up being re-released into the atmosphere. Other attempts have been made to store captured CO2 by sequestering it in geological formations, with the disadvantage of high energy consumption and the risk of gases leaking back into the atmosphere.
Stockmann G et al. (2018), Applied Geochemistry 89: 11-22.Ikaite (CaCO 3 -6H2O), a hydrated form of calcite, is a mineral that exists in unique tuff columns in Ikkafjord in southwest Greenland. Synthesis of ikaite has previously been carried out on a laboratory scale, but only in small quantities over long periods of time and yielded only very small crystals on the order of 20-100 µm. The synthesis was carried out mainly to study the properties of natural systems where ikaite is present, and was carried out in various ways: by rapid mixing of solutions, direct or by immersion in a continuously stirred solution. Sometimes these mixtures were left to allow crystallization to proceed for weeks or months, usually always producing a low yield of ikaite in the form of very small crystals. However, to date it has not been possible to obtain ikaite in quantities and conditions that make the practical use of ikaite for any purpose realistic. For these previous studies on the production of ikaite, see, for example, Hu YB et al. (2014), Marine Chemistry 162: 10-18 and Stockmann G et al. (2018), Applied Geochemistry 89: 11-22.

Objectives of the invention
An object of embodiments of the present invention is to provide methods and means for preparing ikaite and calcite so as to facilitate the reduction of carbon dioxide from emissions or atmospheric carbon dioxide.
The essence of the invention
The present inventor has discovered that by a simple and economically attractive process large quantities of ikaite can be prepared at a rate hitherto unprecedented. In addition, it was discovered that ikaite can be prepared from aqueous solutions in which appreciable amounts of carbonate and carbon dioxide-derived bicarbonate are dissolved. Thus, the technology presented here produces significantly larger ikaite crystals than
Для этой цели настоящее изобретение обеспечивает ряд практических решений для быстрых и надежных способов получения икаита.- 1 043775 observed previously, and thereby provides a simple means of capturing carbon dioxide gas. Therefore, in its most general aspect, the present invention relates to the use of ikaite as a carbon dioxide storage/reduction agent. For this purpose, the present invention provides a number of practical solutions for rapid and reliable methods for producing ikaite.
2.The present invention departs from other routes for the synthesis of ikaite, since the developed method for producing ikaite, described in detail below, takes a different approach than previously, and additionally aims to retain CO2 in the final product by ikaite, calcite or other forms of CaCO3 for long-term carbon capture and CO 2 removal. The advantage of storing CO2 with ikaite as an intermediate form is the low energy required for ikaite to crystallize and subsequently convert to calcite, and is thus a very economical way of achieving long-term CO2 storage.
The present invention relies on creating a chemical gradient between two layers, where one layer is a solution provided, for example, in formulas 1-5 in the examples, and the other is IMS (artificial sea water) or a similar aqueous solution. Thus, the present invention is aimed at creating a constant microenvironment where bicarbonate/carbonate solutions are mixed with IMV, giving crystals significantly larger than in any earlier experiments where synthetic ikaite crystals were in the range of 20-40 microns; wherein the process of this invention produces large synthetic ikaite crystals of varying sizes, some >2 mm, most <1-1.5 mm, and some very small <100 µm. The controlled mixing that this chemical stratification creates also ensures an optimal contact boundary, allowing more efficient crystal deposition and therefore better utilization of the applied solutions.
The number and size of crystals, together with the deposition rate, achieved using the present invention greatly exceeds previously achieved parameters. Thus, this method provides a good reason to implement this invention in CO2 capture plants already collecting CO2 from the atmosphere, waste gases or other sources.
Thus, the invented method of preparing ikaite can be carried out by establishing a stationary boundary between an alkaline aqueous solution and a (saline) aqueous solution (see below for details). Instead of continuously mixing the two solutions, a stationary interface has been shown to provide an environment that facilitates the formation of ikaite crystals. But, since the two solutions that meet at the interface are completely compatible, according to the results obtained by the inventor, it is a great advantage to feed one of the solutions into the other at a low speed through the surface that separates the two solutions, since this will maintain the interface, and also provide a surface on which crystals can nucleate and then grow. It is clear, however, that this surface is not essential for the preparation of ikaite crystals alone - the essential feature is the maintenance of a stationary interface.
Therefore, in a first aspect, the present invention relates to a method for preparing ikaite comprising reacting an alkaline aqueous solution which contains carbonate and bicarbonate ions with an aqueous solution which contains Ca 2+ at a temperature not exceeding 15° C., wherein the contact between the alkaline aqueous solution and the aqueous solution occurs on a permeable or porous surface through which the alkaline aqueous solution is introduced into the aqueous solution, or through which the aqueous solution is supplied into the alkaline aqueous solution at a flow rate that facilitates the formation of ikaite crystals. Fig. 6 represents in schematic form one embodiment where the permeable surface exists in the form of a membrane.
In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a method for preserving/reducing carbon dioxide, comprising preparing an alkaline aqueous solution as defined in the first aspect of the present invention above by adding carbon dioxide to an alkaline aqueous medium, then preparing ikaite according to the method in the first aspect of the present invention or preparing calcite or other carbonate forms prepared from said ikaite, and the subsequent preservation of the resulting ikaite and/or carbonate forms.
In a third aspect, the present invention provides a system for preparing ikaite, comprising at least one storage compartment for an alkaline aqueous solution that contains carbonate and bicarbonate, at least one storage compartment for an aqueous solution that contains Ca 2+ , at least one permeable or a porous structure for separating an alkaline aqueous solution and an aqueous solution, wherein said permeable or porous structure allows the flow through at least one surface of the structure of 1) an alkaline aqueous solution into an aqueous solution or 2) an aqueous solution into an alkaline aqueous solution, a mechanism for forcing an alkaline aqueous solution or aqueous solution through at least one surface of the structure.

Detailed Description of the Invention
Definitions.
Следует заметить, что ионная сила водных растворов, используемых в настоящем изобретении, может регулироваться согласно необходимости, но предпочтительны величины, которые типичны для природной морской воды (Ъ0,7 М).An aqueous solution in the present context means an aqueous solution with a weak to moderately alkaline pH, which will typically contain calcium ions; often the aqueous solution will be a saline aqueous solution, i.e. an aqueous solution containing NaCl as the main salt particles. An example of a (saline) aqueous solution is natural seawater. Salinity is less important than pH and calcium ion content. Therefore, the presence of NaCl is not necessary in aqueous solution, although it is preferred due to easy access to, for example, natural seawater. It should be noted that the ionic strength of the aqueous solutions used in the present invention can be adjusted as necessary, but values that are typical of natural seawater (b0.7 M) are preferred.
As used herein, the expression alkaline aqueous solution means an aqueous solution that has an alkaline pH and which must contain a carbonate/bicarbonate buffer system.
A permeable or porous surface in the present context is a surface through which an alkaline aqueous solution or aqueous solution can be introduced into a surrounding or adjacent solution. The exact shape and composition of the permeable or porous surface is not significant. For example, it may be formed from one or more sides of a structure made of a porous material, such as a porous rock, a porous stone, a porous ceramic material, a metal, rubber or plastic surface containing a plurality of holes, a membrane material, and any other material or structure, through which a solution can enter and then leave, forming an interface with a second solution, since the structure containing a given surface has a significantly high hydraulic conductivity, allowing fluid to be supplied through a given structure through a given surface to contact another solution.
Specific embodiments of the invention.
The method according to the first aspect of the invention.
As stated above, the first aspect concerns a method for preparing ikaite (ie: CaCO 3 -6H 2 O) comprising reacting an alkaline aqueous solution that contains carbonate and bicarbonate ions with an aqueous solution that contains Ca 2+ at a temperature not exceeding 15°C, where the contact between the alkaline aqueous solution and the aqueous solution occurs on a permeable or porous surface through which the alkaline aqueous solution is supplied to the aqueous solution, or through which the aqueous solution is supplied to the alkaline aqueous solution at a flow rate that facilitates the formation of ikaite crystals.
By introducing a solution through a porous surface into contact with another solution, it is achieved that a stationary or quasi-stationary boundary zone can be created between
Фактически, путем регулирования подачи раствора через пористую поверхность можно избегать образования отходов реагентов, гарантируя, что имеет место максимальное образование икаита на границе жидкости.- 3 043775 two solutions, facilitating the formation of ikaite in a given boundary zone, usually at a porous surface, but also at an interface where there is a gradient between the two solutions. In this context, an important feature is that the flow rate of the solution supplied to the other solution is carefully controlled (for example, by a pumping system or by using gravity) so as to maintain the boundary zone for an extended period. In fact, by controlling the flow of solution through a porous surface, the generation of waste reagents can be avoided, ensuring that maximum ikaite formation occurs at the liquid interface.
In practice, it is also possible to create the necessary boundary zone between two solutions by establishing layers (strata) of solutions having different densities - this principle is known when establishing a gradient, for example, of sucrose when performing differential centrifugation. In such a setup, the formation of ikaite crystals will occur at the interface between strata, where the concentrations of reagents are optimal for the formation of ikaite. However, feeding the solution through a porous surface is preferred since this technology facilitates that a controlled amount of solution reacts with another solution over time in a simple manner, whereas the establishment of permanent strata/layers of different densities is more difficult to control in terms of constant addition of reagents. And, if a system is used, for example, with parallel laminar flow of solutions, it cannot be expected that optimal reaction conditions are present along the entire length of the contact zone between the solutions.
It has been found that an alkaline aqueous solution having a pH in the range of 8-12 provides better results, and especially the pH may preferably be in the range of 8.5-11.5, for example in the range of 9-11, and preferably in the range of 9-10 . Creating a highly buffered carbonate/bicarbonate solution will ensure that these conditions are met, but in the event that it is desired to introduce carbon dioxide into the solution (e.g. by aerating the solution with carbon dioxide-rich gas), care should be taken that the decrease in pH is counteracted - e.g. adding a base or by using additional buffer systems, which can stabilize the pH of an alkaline aqueous solution.
The method of this invention is not particularly dependent on the carbonate/bicarbonate concentration in the alkaline aqueous solution - even a saturated solution containing the two components in a ratio that provides the desired pH will be effective as long as the aqueous solution includes at least a stoichiometrically sufficient amount of ions calcium. The solubility of bicarbonate in water is 69 g/L at 0°C and 96 g/L at 20°C at 1 bar, so if operating at ambient pressure the maximum bicarbonate concentration will not exceed ~90 g/L. However, it is within the scope of the present invention to operate the process at higher pressures, allowing higher concentrations of bicarbonate and carbonate in the alkaline aqueous solution. This is, for example, important if the method of the first aspect of the present invention is carried out in natural seawater at a certain depth - for every 10 m of immersion in seawater, the pressure will increase by approximately 1 bar, increasing the solubility of carbonate and bicarbonate.
Typically, the carbonate and bicarbonate ions in an alkaline aqueous solution will be primarily in the form of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, but it should be understood that the precise nature of any carbonate or bicarbonate salt is of little relevance to the process of the first aspect of this invention. At any value, due to the alkaline pH of an alkaline aqueous solution, there is an excess of bicarbonate ions relative to carbonate ions in said solution.
7,5-8,5.As for the aqueous solution, it usually has a pH>7.0, but in most cases this solution is only slightly alkaline: in this context, the pH of natural seawater is effective when performing the method of the present invention. Therefore, the aqueous solution preferably has a pH that is less than 10, for example less than 9, and preferably in the range of 7.5-8.5.
As stated above, for the formation of ikaite, a prerequisite is that calcium ions are present when bicarbonate and carbonate are supplied - therefore, the aqueous solution must contain the required amount, preferably an excess, of Ca 2+ relative to the carbonate and bicarbonate in the alkaline aqueous solution.
In one preferred embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention, the (brine) aqueous solution is natural seawater - from an economic point of view this is preferable and attractive for many practical installations, but this does not exclude the preparation of artificial seawater, i.e. aqueous solutions that are optimized for this purpose.
When choosing the rate of interaction between two solutions - i.e. by regulating the supply of one solution to another, the formation of crystals is facilitated. Typically, crystals will nucleate and then grow on a permeable or porous surface. Therefore, the rate at which one solution is fed into the other is essential to ensure that crystal formation continues at the interface between the two solutions.
It should be noted, however, that the flow rate should be maintained relatively low (below a given speed) until nucleation of ikaite crystals is complete - after nucleation is complete.
Alternatively, the porous or permeable surface may be provided with ikaite crystals that have already been formed (eg in the previous method of the present invention) - thus the relatively slow introduction step of crystal formation can be bypassed and the process can be carried out continuously at high speed.
Regarding temperature, it was presented in Stockmann G. et al. (2018), Applied Geochemistry 89: 11-22 that ikaite can crystallize at temperatures up to about 15°C, but it is believed that lower temperatures are preferable: typically the process of the present invention will be carried out at a temperature not exceeding 14°C, e.g. not exceeding 13°C, 12°C, 11°C, 10°C, 9°C or 8°C. However, the optimal temperatures for the synthesis of ikaite vary with different physicochemical conditions, for example, the composition and concentrations of IMV components, the concentration of solutions 1-3 given in the examples, pH of solutions and partial pressure.
Preparation of an alkaline aqueous solution will typically involve introducing CO 2 gas into a carbonate solution, preferably a sodium or potassium carbonate solution. In this context, it is only necessary to ensure that the resulting solution does not reach a pH that is too low - adding a separate base or using strong secondary buffers can ensure this.
In certain practical embodiments, the method of this invention can be performed at sea (using surrounding seawater as an aqueous solution) - since the temperature in seawater varies around the globe, but is consistently lower at a certain depth, this method in such cases is performed at a depth where the ambient temperature does not exceed 15°C or less than the maximum temperature discussed in detail above.
In advantageous embodiments, ikaite is then converted into calcite or other carbonate forms - since ikaite is a relatively volatile substance, calcite and other forms of calcium carbonate are preferred, for example for long-term storage. Conversion to calcite or other forms of carbonate is relatively simple and essentially consists of dehydration of the ikaite: this can be accomplished by heating the ikaite to temperatures higher than the temperature at which the ikaite was formed and/or by drying the ikaite.
Finally, the method of the first aspect of this invention will typically include the additional step of preserving the ikaite and/or the resulting carbonate forms.
Thus, the synthesis of ikaite or calcite can be accomplished by controlled mixing of ikaite solution in a standing IMV or in a design that allows flow of IMV. The flow rate of the ikaite and IMV solution can then be tailored to specific reactor designs for optimal crystallization and efficiency.
Embodiments of the 2nd aspect of this invention.
As will be clear from the foregoing, an important aspect of the present invention relates to a method for storing/reducing carbon dioxide. Essentially, this method supplies carbon dioxide gas from any source into the alkaline aqueous solution discussed above, where ikaite or calcite or other carbonates are prepared according to the method of the first aspect of this invention described above; the resulting forms of ikaite and/or carbonate are then stored, for example underground.
The method of the 2nd aspect of the present invention can be carried out in different forms: it can be carried out directly in connection with carbon dioxide-emitting installations, plants, devices or structures, and it can be carried out so as to extract carbon dioxide directly from atmospheric air. Systems for introducing large quantities of gaseous material into a liquid medium are well known and can be used to prepare the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer system that constitutes the alkaline aqueous solution used in this invention.
Embodiments related to the 3rd aspect of the present invention.
This aspect relates to a system for preparing ikaite, comprising at least one compartment for storing an alkaline aqueous solution that contains carbonate and bicarbonate, at least one compartment for storing an aqueous solution that contains Ca 2+ , at least one permeable or porous structure for separating an alkaline aqueous solution and an aqueous solution, wherein said permeable or porous structure allows the flow through at least one surface of the structure of 1) an alkaline aqueous solution into an aqueous solution or 2) an aqueous solution into an alkaline aqueous solution, a mechanism for forcing the alkaline an aqueous solution or an aqueous solution through at least one surface of the structure.
Через перфорированную или иным образом проницаемую поверхность карбонатный/бикарбонатный раствор поступает в ИМВ так, что создается стационарная граница раздела, где могут формироваться кристаллы икаита (какA schematic representation of one embodiment of such a system (or installation) of the present invention is shown in FIG. 6. The first compartment A stores the carbonate/bicarbonate solution, which is continuously supplied to the bottom of the second compartment B, which contains the IMV. Through a perforated or otherwise permeable surface, the carbonate/bicarbonate solution enters the IMV such that a stationary interface is created where ikaite crystals can form (as
Since the carbonate/bicarbonate solution is less dense than the IMV (particularly after the formation of ikaite), it rises upward and thus allows the constant addition of new carbonate/bicarbonate.
Preferably, the system of the present invention will further comprise a device for introducing carbon dioxide into the alkaline aqueous solution. In fig. 6 such a device may be present in compartment A or in a pre-mix chamber or compartment - one simple means of introducing carbon dioxide into a solution is to bubble carbon dioxide-rich gas/air through the solution.
It is advantageous to organize the system of the present invention to facilitate the recovery of ikaite from the porous matrix and/or aqueous solution. There are various solutions for this purpose. In one example, the surface on which the ikaite is formed is allowed to tilt relative to a horizontal plane; Since ikaite is quite fragile, the force of gravity at some points will cause ikaite to break off and settle at the bottom of the inclined surface. Alternatively, a mechanical mechanism that simply scrapes and possibly collects the ikaite can be included in the system.
As described above with respect to the first aspect of this invention, the resulting ikaite can be conveniently converted into calcite or other stable carbonate forms allowing long-term storage; therefore, the system of the present invention may further comprise a compartment for converting ikaite into calcite or other carbonate forms by drying or heating to >8°C. However, ikait can simply be stored in a remote location where this method is performed.
The system of the present invention may be combined or connected to a gas emission outlet containing carbon dioxide; these emissions are typically introduced into the alkaline aqueous solution, preferably using the apparatus described above for introducing carbon dioxide into the alkaline aqueous solution.
The aqueous solution may be natural salt water, such as sea water, especially when the system is installed in geographic areas where there is easy access to significant quantities of natural salt water. In such cases, the system may be located in a coastal position (taking advantage of the cooler temperatures that exist at certain sea depths to facilitate the formation of ikaite), but the system may also be located on land and benefit from natural salt water.
As also described above, the exact shape and composition of the permeable or porous structure is not essential - it can be formed from porous rock or stone, membrane material and any other material through which the solution can be introduced and then exited when an interface with a second solution is formed, since this structure has a fairly high hydraulic conductivity. Therefore, in advantageous embodiments of the present invention, natural geological formations can be used that have suitable hydraulic conductivity that allows the creation of a stationary interface between two solutions (where one is fed into the other from a permeable porous structure).
In practice, it is also possible to create the necessary boundary zone between two solutions by establishing layers (strata) of solutions having different densities - this principle is known when a gradient is established, for example, sucrose, when differential centrifugation is performed. In such a setup, the formation of ikaite crystals will occur in those layers of two solutions where the concentrations of reagents are optimal for the formation of ikaite. However, feeding the solution through a porous surface is preferred as this technology facilitates that a controlled amount of solution reacts with another solution over time in a simple manner, whereas the establishment of permanent layers/strata of different densities is more difficult to control in terms of adding reagents. And, if a system with parallel laminar flow of solutions is used, it cannot be expected that optimal reaction conditions are present along the entire length of the contact zone between the solutions.
With respect to the system of the 3rd aspect of the present invention, all descriptions present herein regarding the first - and, when applicable, the second - aspects of the present invention apply mutatis mutandis to the system of the 3rd aspect. Thus, all descriptions regarding the reagents and conditions used in the first and 2nd aspects can be directly incorporated when the 3rd aspect system is implemented.

If carbonate or bicarbonate is dissolved in water, equilibrium is established according to the following equations:

6 043775 nata will be balanced until equilibrium is established.
Only a small portion of dissolved CO2 is present in the form of H2CO 3 , the majority is present as actual dissolved CO2. The amount of CO2 in water is in equilibrium with the fraction of ICO /P-GCO / co^,, and „ aa / v constitutes the main pH buffer of fresh water and seawater throughout the world.
10,33.Based on the above equations, CO2 is the predominant species at pH less than 6.35, while HCO 3 is the predominant species at pH in the range 6.35-10.33, and CO 3 2 is the predominant species at pH greater than 10 ,33.
Artificial sea water (ASW).
IMV can be created using a variety of salt solutions, see for example the recipe below. In the present invention, complete precipitation yields were achieved with artificial seawater as well as natural seawater; it was found that solutions must have a certain degree of salinity and have slightly alkaline pH values. Other inorganic solutes such as phosphates, nitrates, etc. do not appear to affect the precipitation process. The present invention is not limited to the use of a particular solution.
IMV can also be replaced by a CaCl 2 solution or other source of calcium ions in solution to carry out the precipitation process. Sufficient available calcium and carbonate ions in solution are the most important parameters.
Regarding formulations containing IMV, the complexity of seawater, whether artificial or natural, may contain many other components that make the reactions much more complex.
Solutions:
Na 2 CO 3 (aq), sodium carbonate dissolved in water (see equilibrium equations above),
е. NaHCO 3 (aq), i.e. sodium bicarbonate dissolved in water (see equilibrium equations above),
е. 3. Na 2 CO 3 (aq) + NaHCO 3 (aq), i.e. sodium carbonate + sodium bicarbonate, dissolved in water,
Na 2 CO 3 (aq) + CO 2 (g) = solution 3 (CO 2 bubbling gives a higher proportion of HCO 3 - and CO 3 in equilibrium, the latter dominates at high pH; however, since CO 2 will influence equilibrium towards a more acidic pH, which does not favor the formation of ikaite, CO 2 bubbling can be advantageously achieved by measures to increase the pH, i.e. using a stronger buffer system or adding alkaline substances),
5. IMV* Reactions:
CO 2 (g) S CO 2 (aq) (CO 2 + H 2 O s H 2 CO 3 S H + + HCO s s H + + COz)
Na 2 CO 3 (aq) + CO 2 (aq) + H 2 O i; 2Na + + СО1'Н + + HCOj (solution 3)
3. HCOi s СО3 +Н+ 3. HCOi s CO 3 +H +
4. Ca 2+ + HCO 3 CaHCO 3 (Calcium ions come from IMV or other suitable salt solutions)
5. Ca 2+ + CO 2 'CaCO 3 (Calcium ions from IMV)
6. Ca 2+ + CO 2 ' + 6H 2 O CaCOz · 6H 2 O (tv) (ikait)
7. CaCO3 · 6H 2 O (sol) + heating (>8-15°C) / dehydration —► CaCO3 (sol) (calcium carbonate/calcite or other forms of CaCO3)
Therefore, from reactions 4 and 5, CaHCO 3 and CaCO 3 exist, creating a calcium carbonate solution also containing HCO 3 - , Ca 2+ and CO3 2- . The ratio between them, in particular HCO3 - /CO3 2- , and pH probably regulate the process of ikaite precipitation, thus bubbling CO2 into Na 2 CO 3 dissolved in water increases the proportion of HCO 3 - and CO 3 2- in solution, leading to greater precipitation of ikaite at high pH, see below.

Solution 3 was then slowly mixed with IMV through a 78 cm flat porous sandstone with a pore size of ~50-150 μm placed at the bottom of a 40 L glass container filled with IMV. The solution was fed into the sandstone through a silicone tube under the influence of gravity, and the flow rate was adjusted using a tube clamp to ~1 ml per min. After a few minutes, visible ikaite crystals appeared on the surface of the sandstone, since solution 3 is lighter due to lower salinity, it will have natural buoyancy, creating an upward displacement when entering the heavier IMV.
1.A dense layer of crystals covered the sandstone after 1 hour. Ikaite crystal identification and size was performed using a USB microscope showing monoclinic ikaite crystals up to ~1.5-2 mm in length. See fig. 1.

The following experiments were performed in a refrigerated room where the temperature was set to 5°C.
During summer in Europe, 420 L of seawater PSU 24, pH 8.3 was collected using a sump pump submerged to a depth of 1 m at mid-tide in the Great Belt Bay on the coast of Zealand, Denmark*. The collected seawater was first filtered from large particles using a filter with approximately 1 mm mesh size, then passed through a 200 μm filter sock to collect smaller particles. The filtered water was first pumped into one 250 L container, which was connected to an additional 250 L container by a 20 m long hose running across the cold steel floor of the chilled room, thereby increasing cooling efficiency. The initial water temperature was 21°C, and after continuously circulating the water between two 250 L containers for 24 hours, the temperature was 8°C when the experiment was started. Over the next 12 hours, the water temperature dropped to 5°C and stabilized.
Было бы очень выгодно отбирать воду с большей глубины, где соленость выше, а температура ниже.*) The initial temperature of the collected water was quite high, this, of course, should be taken into account if a more permanent and/or large-scale device is created. It would be very beneficial to take water from greater depths, where salinity is higher and temperature is lower.
