Abstract

A slow-release formulation comprises growth hormone, somatomedin, growth factor, or a biologically active fragment or derivative thereof, dispersed in fat or wax, or a mixture thereof, dispersed in a pharmaceutically and pharmacologically acceptable liquid carrier medium, with, however, wax not being present when the growth hormone is beef somatotropin and the liquid carrier medium is an oil, and with the liquid carrier medium not being an oil when the derivative is a metal complex of a growth hormone. The formulation can be prepared by from approx. 1 to 30% growth hormone, somatomedin, growth factor, or a biologically active fragment or derivative thereof, from approx. 5 to 60% fat or wax, or a mixture thereof, from 0 to approx. 15% surface-active agent, a preservative, a stabiliser, salt, buffer, or a mixture thereof, and oil up to a total of 100%, being heated in order to obtain a homogeneous mixture, after which the mixture is cooled to ambient temperature in order to produce the formulation. The formulation can be used for increasing milk production in lactating animals, for increasing growth in animals, and for raising the levels, and maintaining such raised levels, of a biologically active protein, peptide or polypeptide in the blood, for improving feed efficiency, for increasing growth rate, for increasing muscle size, for decreasing body fat and for improving the ratio between meat and fat in an animal.
