Abstract

A vaccine for protecting against diseases caused by microorganisms which have a membrane as the outermost envelope, in particular a mycoplasma, characterized in that it contains, as the active principle, plasma membranes from the microorganisms in question, which membranes are at least to a large extent free of the other constituents of the microorganisms. The vaccine is prepared by culturing the microorganisms in question, collecting and lysing the cells in an ultrasonic process and sedimenting the membranes by centrifugation and bringing them into a form which is suitable for vaccination. When the active principle consists of membranes from Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, the vaccine provides, when administered subcutaneously and/or intramuscularly, efficient protection of pigs and the litters of pregnant sows against enzootic pneumonia.
