Abstract
A piston rod seal for a cross-head engine has a sealing ring consisting of a number of ring segments 15; 15'. A clearance 28 between the mutually facing end surfaces 26 of adjacent segments is, in towards the piston rod, closed off by projections 27 which run at an acute angle into the circular contact surface 25 of the segments. The end surface side of the projection forms an angle β with the plane containing the axis of symmetry of the contact surface and the tip of the projection 27. Provided β is half the size of the angle of curvature α of the contact surface 25, the ring will always form a closed contact surface of 360 degree irrespective of the wear of the segments. <IMAGE>
