Abstract

In the process, the cut flax or the cut other plants suitable for retting are treated with a SPS-ase preparation in an aqueous medium until the retting is completed or substantially completed. In comparison with other known retting processes, the process has a number of technical advantages, including, in particular, far shorter retting time, the formation of fibres with better reproducibility, in greater yield, with better strength and with brighter colour, as well as reduced pollution problems. If desired, the retted fibres can be subjected to a bleaching, which, on the one hand, produces a satisfactory appearance and, on the other hand, does not in any way adversely affect the strength of the fibres.
