Description

DESCRIPTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a panel for an external cover of a building.
[0002] External panels are used widely as weather screen cladding in ventilated facade systems. Decorative facades in ventilated constructions are increasingly being used as this solution offers thermal, aesthetic and waterproofing benefits to the building.
[0003] Such facade cover systems are advantageously mounted on an insulating building system which is mounted on a load-bearing inner wall. Examples of such systems are known in the prior art, e.g. from WO 2007/110244.
[0004] To provide a visually attractive fagade appearance and a weather resistant protective screen stone panels are often used as the external building cover. However, stone panels are relatively heavy which means that the substructure carrying the fagade cover must be dimensioned so that the substructure can carry such external faced building cover.
[0005] More light-weight panels for the fagade cladding may then be used instead. Examples of such light-weight panels may be aluminium or the like. Solid stone panels, though, have the advantage that the material is dimensionally stable compared to e.g. aluminium when subjected to temperature changes.
[0006] A laminated panel comprising a stone veneer sheet which is adhered to the external side of a carrier board is known from US 2011/027566.
[0007] By the present invention it is realised that a light-weight fagade panel having a stone appearance may be provided. Accordingly, the invention concerns a laminated panel for an external cover of a building, said panel having an external side and an internal side, said panel comprising a stone veneer sheet on the external side which is adhered to a carrier board made of mineral fibres with a density of 900-1500 kg/m3, preferably approximately 1050-1200 kg/m3.
[0008] A high-density mineral wool fibre product is advantageous since it is very dimensionally stable and in itself weather-resistant. Such product does not therefore change significantly in length or width with fluctuations in humidity or temperature.
[0009] Moreover, such panel is relatively light-weight compared to a solid stone panel. By the invention it is realised that a thin stone sheet, i.e. a stone veneer, is laminated onto the external surface of a mineral fibre board whereby a dimensionally stable weather protective fagade cover panel may be provided, which has a significantly reduced weight compared to a solid stone panel.
[0010] Preferably, the carrier board preferably has a thickness of 6-20 mm, preferably approximately 8-10 mm. This results in a relatively light-weight panel which is also easy to handle during mounting.
[0011] Preferably, the stone veneer sheet has a thickness of 1.0-2.0 mm, preferably approximately 1.5 mm. Stone veneer can be made from natural stone as well as manufactured stone.
[0012] In a preferred embodiment, the stone veneer sheet is adhered to the carrier board by a hot-melt adhesive, preferably a polyurethane hot-melt adhesive. In particular, the adhesive is applied to one or both of the opposing surfaces of the stone veneer and carrier board, respectively, and then pressed at a predetermined pressure of 5-10 kg/m2, preferably approximately 6 kg/m2 for 1-2 minutes, preferably 1.5 minutes. Hereby, a firm adhesion is secured and thereby a durable laminated product.
[0013] In the following the invention is described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an example of a building cover system with an exterior panel cover;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a laminated panel according to an embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 3 is a schematic perspective view of a corner assembly of a panel according to an embodiment of the invention.
[0014] With reference to figure 1, a building cover system comprising exterior fagade cover panels 2 is shown. The building wall 1 is provided with a substructure 3 to which the panels 2 are mounted. In the figure the substructure is shown without insulation but it is realised that the substructure 3 could also serve the purpose of holding a cover of insulation material between the wall 1 and the exterior cover panels 2.
[0015] The panels 2 are made as laminated panels 2 as shown in fig. 2. The panel 2 comprise a carrier board made of a high-density mineral wool fibre board 4 onto which a stone veneer top layer 5 is adhesively attached. The board 4 made of mineral fibre wool is compressed to a high density of approx. 1050±150 kg/m3 and has a thickness of 10 mm. The stone veneer 5 typically has a density of approx. 3000 kg/m3 and for the laminated panel 2 the veneer 5 is provided in a thickness of 1.25-2.5 mm, preferably 1.5 mm whereby the stone veneer 5 may be just about thick enough to be self-supportive and will nevertheless be supported by the carrier board 4. The stone veneer 5, which may also be referred to as slate veneer, is preferably provided on a base fabric, such as a glass fibre mat, with slate on the top whereby the veneer gets a stone appearance.
[0016] The stone veneer 5 is adhesively laminated onto the carrier board 4 by applying a layer of polyurethane hot-melt adhesive (not shown) to one of the surfaces to be adhered together. The laminated panel 2 is then pressed together for a certain amount of time with a pressing pressure of approx. 6 kg/m2 which is sufficient to hold the veneer 5 in surface contact with the carrier board 4 without compressing the carrier board 4 and without cracking the stone veneer 5. The pressing time can be as short as 1.5 minutes by room temperature (i.e. about 20°C).
[0017] With reference to fig. 3, the panel according to the invention may be provided as a corner assembly 4"' of two carrier boards 4' and 4" which are chamfered at their joining edges and then provided with an outer top layer of stone veneer 5. It is realised by the invention that the stone veneer 5 can be bend or folded around the corner 5' to form a continuous outer protective top layer on the panel 2 even when the panel 2 is provided as a corner panel as shown in fig. 3.
