Abstract

Method and apparatus for spectrophotometric determination of the concentration of a number of hemoglobin derivatives comprising at least deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin or parameters derived from the concentration of individual hemoglobin derivatives, especially the oxygen saturation fraction, in whole blood, is based on the fact that light is transmitted to the blood being tested, the modification produced by the blood in the light that was transmitted to the blood is determined at a number of individual wavelengths, and the concentrations, or the derived parameters, are determined on the basis of the modification of the light at the individual wavelengths and on the basis of predetermined coefficients which represent the light absorption characteristics for each of the hemoglobin derivatives at each of the individual wavelengths, in that predetermined coefficients representing an absorption which is characteristic of the turbidity at each of the wavelengths are essentially used to compensate for any error in the values caused by turbidity. <IMAGE>
