Abstract
A process for preparing 5Z forms of 2,3,4-trinor-1,5- inter-m-phenyleneprostacyclin derivatives of the formula I: <IMAGE> where R1 is H, a cation or lower alkyl, R2 is H or methyl, A is -CH2-CH2-, (trans)-CH=CH- or -C=C-, and B is alkyl or a cyclohexyl group which is optionally substituted by a lower alkyl group, by isomerizing a compound of the formula IIE: <IMAGE> where R1' is lower alkyl or an aralkyl group, and, where appropriate, subsequently converting R1' into R1. The isomerization is brought about by the compound IIE being treated, in the presence of an anhydrous solvent, with at least one salt of an organic base and an organic sulphonic acid or a fluorinated or chlorinated acetic acid. The 5Z compounds are biologically more active than the corresponding 5E isomers.
