A method of making a wind turbine component is described. The method comprises: (a) providing an elongate strip of fibre-reinforced polymeric material, the strip having an abutment surface; (b) removing polymeric material from a region of the abutment surface by laser ablation; (c) stacking the strip in a mould together with one or more further elongate strips of fibre-reinforced polymeric material, such that the abutment surface of the strip abuts an abutment surface of a neighbouring strip in the stack; (d) introducing resin into the mould such that the resin infiltrates between the respective abutment surfaces of adjacent strips in the stack; and (e) curing the resin to bond the strips together. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the component is a spar cap for a wind turbine blade.
