Abstract

Self-regulating electronic ballast system 10 which is protected against being unloaded and which contains an energy source 12 for activating at least one vapour discharge tube 66 with a regulated current and a limited voltage in order to keep the input and output power of the vapour discharge tube 66 at a predetermined value. The ballast system 10 contains a filter circuit 11 connected to the energy source 12 by an induction circuit 15 connected to the filter circuit 11. The induction circuit 15 has a primary winding 42 with output, which forms an auto-transformer configuration for determining the size of the regulated current. The induction circuit 15 contains a trigger control winding 48 to generate a control current and a non-loading protective circuit 99 to generate a voltage across the vapour discharge tube 66 dependent upon the regulated current and to keep the output voltage at a predetermined value when the vapour discharge tube 66 is disconnected from the electronic ballast system 10. In this way the output voltage of the ballast system 10 is principally reduced when the vapour discharge tube 66 is disconnected from the whole circuit. This ensures greater reliability and a longer lifetime for the vapour discharge tube 66. <IMAGE>
