Abstract

The process comprises adding all three of the following individually, or at most two, which are premixed, together, to the sewage or other impure water in a mixing zone: (a) an inorganic coagulant, (b) an anionic polymer, and (c) a cationic polymer, while intimately mixing the added chemicals and the sewage or other impure water, with the proviso that (d) the inorganic coagulant, either alone or together with the anionic polymer or the cationic polymer, cannot be added last, and that (e) the anionic polymer and the cationic polymer cannot be premixed and added together. This yields a chemically treated discharge stream which contains large, compact, thermally bound, essentially shearing effect-resistant and rapidly separable flocculates. The flocculates are separated from the liquid in a separation zone. Treated discharge stream is then removed from the separation zone. A previously determined quantity of the treated discharge stream is then recirculated, for example to the mixing zone or to another location which is determined by experimenting with the installation.
