Abstract

Process for the purification of waste water (effluent) with a high content of ammonium ions and containing phosphate ions by precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate. In a standardisation stage, the ammonium ion content of the waste water is determined and, depending on the magnitude of the ammonium ion content of the waste water, phosphate ions are added if necessary. A slurry of magnesium oxide and/or magnesium ions in excess is added in a mixing stage and the pH is adjusted to the alkaline region. Between the standardisation stage and the mixing stage a pre-treatment of the standardised water is carried out for a residence time of 5 to 30 minutes, during which the ph is adjusted to the acid region. Subsequently, in the mixing stage, the pH is slowly raised to an almost neutral level until an initial turbidity develops. Magnesium ammonium phosphate precipitates out when the pH is increased further. Discharge water materially free from ammonium ions is drawn off.
