Abstract

This latent curing agent for aminoplast resins, especially for melamine formaldehyde resins, intended to be applied as impregnation resins, consists of an aqueous solution of ethylenediamine sulphite, obtained by reaction, in aqueous medium, of sulphur dioxide and ethylenediamine, the sulphur dioxide: ethylenediamine molar ratio being such that the pH of the said solution is greater than or equal to 6 and less than or equal to 8. The sulphur dioxide: ethylenediamine molar ratio is especially between 1.25:1 and 1:1.5. The invention also relates to an impregnation blend (mixture) based on a thermosetting aminoplast resin comprising an aminoplast-resin precondensate and a latent curing agent such as defined hereinabove and, if necessary, standard additives such as mould-release agents, wetting agents, solvent, plasticisers and fillers.
