Abstract

In the case of the known discontinuous drainage processes in which the operating pressure has to be reduced to the surrounding pressure between the removal of the drained sludge cake and the refilling of the drainage apparatus, the filtering action can quickly drop off since fresh raw sludge reaches the drainage chambers only by passing already used filtering surfaces and pushing along in front of it a portion of already predrained sludge cake. The novel process is intended to permit a continuous operation with uniform pressure level and a constant, high filtering capacity while at the same time reducing the possibility of faults arising to a minimum. This is achieved in that the fresh raw sludge (21) is fed at constant pressure in the opposite direction in each case to the direction of movement of the piston (8), in particular in the immediate vicinity of the piston, to the filtering surface shortly after the latter has been swept over by the piston and thereby cleaned. The process and the apparatus for carrying out the process thus make it possible for aqueous sludges to be drained continuously by means of pressure. <IMAGE>
