Es ist ferner bekannt, daß für die Methylierung mit Methanol und/ oder Dimethyläther solche Katalysatoren besonders vorteilhaft sind, wie sie in der Literatur für dasIt is known that one can use aromatic hydrocarbons with aliphatic alcohols, optionally also with their ethers in the presence of various Catalysts such as B. zinc chloride, phosphoric acid, acid-activated silicates and aluminum silicates, can alkylate. It is also known that such catalysts are particularly suitable for methylation with methanol and / or dimethyl ether are advantageous, as they are in the literature for the
Toluol bezogene Ausbeute an Xylolen, insbesondere die an p-Xylol, besonders günstig gestaltet.ίο catalytic cracks are given, e.g. B. Combinations from oxides of aluminum and / or of magnesium and silicon, optionally with Additions of other metal oxides, e.g. chromium oxide. This procedure was carried out so that the higher methylated products, i.e. trialkyls and higher ones, returned to the production cycle be, whereby the based on benzene or toluene yield of xylenes, in particular the p-xylene, designed particularly cheap.
.'It has now been found that for the preparation of xylene isomers from benzene or benzene and Toluene can work particularly advantageously by alkylation with methanol and / or dimethyl ether, if the catalytic conversion of methanol and / or dimethyl ether with the in the circuit too leading toluene formed in the reaction of benzene, optionally also with the addition of more fresh toluene, in a second reactor under different conditions than in the first reactor, in which the reaction of the benzene takes place, let go. . Nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren erhält man dagegen sowohl einen guten Umsatz als auch eine gute Isonieren verteilung.ίο especially p-xylene as a precursor of terephthalic acid and o-xylene as one of the possible starting materials for phthalic acid is particularly valuable Represent reaction products, the "separate conversion of benzene and toluene offers the possibility of by maintaining higher temperatures in the benzene furnace, a high benzene rate "through" application milder conditions in the toluene furnace but a favorable one. to achieve a higher distribution of the xylene isomers. If you convert benzene and toluene in a common reactor, then either is only one to achieve higher conversion or a more favorable 'isora distribution of the xylenes. According to the invention Process, on the other hand, gives both good conversion and good isolation distribution.
In the catalytic reaction of benzene or benzene and toluene with methanol and / or dimethyl ether, ethylbenzene is also always formed in larger quantities. The xylene fraction contains up to 2 5-o / o ethylbenzene, depending on the conditions used. If, on the other hand, toluene is reacted with methanol and / or dimethyl ether in the absence of benzene, only very small, usually hardly detectable, amounts of ethylbenzene are produced. Since the xylene fraction is produced by the inventive method by far the greater part in the reactor in which the toluene is methylated, the resulting in the joint processing of the reaction products of the two reactors xylenes contains only about 5 to ioO / 0 ethylbenzene. The known from a given xylene mixture. The amount of ρ-xylene that can be isolated depends on the ratio of the isomers to one another and on the concentration of the p-xylene in the mixture.
The presence of larger amounts of ethylbenzene is then for the recovery of p-xylene by freezing very disadvantageous, especially because ethylbenzene can be easily manipulated can not be removed from the xylene mixture, while z. B. by removing the o-xylene Distillation of the xylenes to an enrichment of the p-xylene and thus to an increase in yield leads. From a xylene mixture obtained by the process according to the invention with a small Ethyibenzene content is therefore a greater yield of p-xylene to be achieved than from a joint Methylation of benzene and toluene obtained xylene fraction.
' ■■■/' ;'."' T{ .:"; ,-'·; ; V^.../ .'·:As has been found, the reactivity of the aromatics increases with the number of alkyl groups. Under the same conditions, toluene converts to alkylated products considerably faster than benzene. With the same xylene production, the toluene cycle in a single-oven process is therefore approximately the same as in the process according to the invention Process circulating · significantly exceed benzene. The inventive concept. The process therefore requires smaller systems than a single-oven process for processing ../; the resulting products. '■■■ /';'."' T { . : "; , - '·;; V ^ ... /. '·:
^ \ ', .."'.;.According to patent application U 2318 IV d / 12 o, the polymethylbenzenes with more than two methyl groups formed in the catalytic reaction of benzene and / or toluene with methanol and / or dimethyl ether are returned to the reaction cycle. As a result, the desired 'products, e.g. 1 B. Xylenes, in particularly high yield. ^ \ ', .. "'.;.
It has now been shown that it can have advantages if one does not or only partially returns the resulting in the methylation of benzene and toluene, boiling above 150 0 'by-products in the reaction circuit. On the one hand, a mode of operation with no or only partial recycling of higher-boiling reaction products results in less coke deposition on the catalysts used, so it has. both a higher total accumulation of usable products and, as a consequence, the possibility of longer implementation periods between the regeneration of the contacts. On the other hand, the higher-boiling products resulting from the methylation are in part self-sought and high-quality products. Products are. For example, in the fraction of the boiling range 150 to 200 0, there are essentially trimethyl, in addition to tetramethyl- 'and methylethyl-. benzenes, which can be used as a solvent or as a high-quality additive to gasoline to improve the octane number. They are particularly suitable for the last-mentioned purpose because this fraction, used in addition to benzene and its lower homologues, as a gasoline additive, results in a more uniform distribution of the aromatics over the entire boiling range of the usual gasoline. All polyalkylbenzenes are also well suited as starting materials for the production of the various benzene polycarboxylic acids. . ■. . The method according to the invention therefore provides for an elastic adaptation of the polymethylbenzene production to the market situation.
For example, one can first isolate the polyalkylbenzenes formed in addition to the xylenes and, optionally after separation into different fractions, send them to suitable uses or, secondly, only the fractions boiling from 150 to 200 ° and above 270 0 for other purposes, but the by-products boiling from 200 to 270 0 return it to the reaction cycle or, thirdly, obtain individual desired fractions or substances, such as durol or hexamethylbenzene, from the reaction products and return the undesired substances to the reaction cycle.

U 2941 IVb/12 οU 2941 IVb / 12 ο
In any case, it is advisable to use the higher-boiling polymethylbenzene (265 °) boiling reaction products cannot be traced back, as these substances cause more coke deposition on. promote contact and thus its inactivation.
B. etwa bei einem Eingangsgewichtsverhältnis vonIf any higher-boiling reaction products are recycled, it is advantageous to feed both the benzene and the toluene reactor in amounts corresponding to the respective conversion. This can be done on the basis of analytical monitoring of the reaction products of the individual reactors. After a while, an equilibrium is established in which there is no longer any increase in the recycled products. The position of the equilibrium depends on the reaction conditions used, in particular the temperature, the throughput and the amount of methanol or dimethyl ether added. At a temperature of 380 0 in the benzene reactor and 3 3 o ° in the toluene reactor, the equilibrium is under otherwise identical conditions z. B. approximately at an input weight ratio of
Benzol: Fraktion 160 bis 27o°=ioo: 5 und 2^ Toluol: Fraktion 160 bis 27o°=ioo:23.Benzene: fraction 160 to 270 ° = 100: 5 and 2 ^ toluene: fraction 160 to 270 ° = 100: 23.
The method operates erfinduiigsgemäße catalytically at temperatures between the boiling point of the Eingangsaromaten and 550 °, preferably at 300 to 400 0 and at normal or elevated pressure, preferably between 10 and 5oatü. Suitable catalysts are all of the type indicated above, preferably the cracking catalysts indicated. It is particularly advantageous to work in such a way that the vapors of the reactants are not passed over a fixed contact, but that the contact is allowed to flow through the reaction space and in this way ensures constant renewal of the effective contact in the reaction space, since the Conversions are highest with a greatly reduced contact time between contact and reaction participant. The contact can be renewed in a special regenerator.
In reactor A , through line ι methanol and / or dimethyl ether, through line 2 fresh benzene and through line 3 circulating benzene, analogously, reactor B is circulated through lines 4 with methanol and / or dimethyl ether and through line 5 toluene fed to which fresh toluene can optionally be added. The furnace products from A and B are fed through line 6 to a separation vessel C, in which small amounts of gas and water of reaction are separated off. In column D , unreacted benzene passes overhead and is fed back to reactor A through line 3. Toluene is distilled overhead from the bottom product of D in column E and returned to reactor B through line 5. The bottom product from E is separated in column F into a xylene mixture as the top product and a by-product mixture to be divided into lower-boiling and higher-boiling components in column G. The xylenes passing over the top of F are then fed to a system for separating the desired xylene isomers, while the top product of G, for example gasoline fractions, and the bottom product can be added to any petroleum residues that may still be processed. By-products which cannot be deposited can be wholly or partially returned to the reaction cycle through the lines 7. Instead of pure benzene, cheaper, homologous benzenes can also be used. In order to prevent the formation of less favorable xylene mixtures resulting from the homolog mixture in reactor A under these conditions, it can then be expedient to add the fresh benzene to the furnace product instead of through line 2 to reactor A through line 8, in order to first add the fresh mixture to the Separate columns into its components.
