Description
A number of methods have been specified for generating preferably visible light by discharges in lamp-shaped bulbs, i.e. bulbs with a base on one side. The simplest method is to bring a glow discharge to unfold between 2 plates or wire-shaped or otherwise suitably shaped electrodes. Such glow lamps can only be used for extremely low light intensities. Another large category of discharge lamps has electrodes that are heated from the outside either by auxiliary means during the ignition period or continuously, but in any case hot during operation, and mostly uses the positive column discharge to generate the light. Such discharge vessels have the disadvantage of heated electrodes and can only be used for currents above a certain minimum amount. The discharge current and thus the amount of light generated can only be regulated if the electrodes are kept permanently at the required operating temperature by separate heating circuits. Another known embodiment of a low-pressure discharge in lamp-shaped bulbs is the so-called cathodic arc discharge. Such discharge vessels can be produced for lower discharge currents than the previous group, but also require appropriate precautions to ensure that the operating temperature of the electrodes does not fall below a corresponding value. The efficiency of the lamps thus naturally becomes more and more unfavorable as the discharge currents decrease.
Investigations according to the invention had set themselves the task of building a gas discharge lamp which, in particular in combination with appropriate phosphors, enables a discharge with higher efficiency to be achieved even at very low discharge currents, which also regulates the light and thus the discharge current within wide limits allows. Such a lamp should at the same time be suitable for operation on the usual supply networks without special precautions. According to the invention, this object is achieved using preferably cold electrodes by suitably lengthening the discharge path and, after further investigations according to the invention, by simultaneously using suitable phosphors on the surface exposed to radiation and discharge.
Discharge tubes have already become known in which the discharge path is lengthened by a plate-shaped partition made of metal or insulating metal. With a suitable choice, such a partition leads to an improvement in the discharge conditions per se and allows a longer discharge path to be accommodated in a given lamp-shaped bulb, but it leads to a lamp shape with preferred light emission directions and, above all, from an essential point of view for the construction of Discharge lamps high efficiency do not use. The irradiation density of the radiation that can be transformed into phosphors is not a linear function of the emitted emission of these phosphors. The relationship between the two is such that when a certain surface loading is exceeded, the efficiency becomes worse and worse. For this reason, in the present invention, the intermediate wall serving to lengthen the discharge path is provided with phosphors and the associated increase in the total phosphor surface exposed to the discharge results in a substantial increase the efficiency. Furthermore, according to the invention, the inner wall of the glass bulb is also exposed to fluorescent material.
Further investigations showed that in this version of fluorescent discharge lamps, the conditions caused by the partition lead to an uneven emission of such lamps. According to a further subject matter of the invention, significantly more favorable conditions can be achieved in that the discharge takes place between an intermediate wall arranged concentrically or approximately concentrically to the electrodes. In this way, a completely uniform distribution of the light in the interior of the lamp bulb is achieved in a simple manner. In this embodiment of discharge lamps, too, it has proven advantageous in accordance with the invention to provide the concentric walls of the discharge space with suitable phosphors. Likewise, the cylindrical body representing the partition is covered with luminescent material on the inside and outside.
The discharge lamp according to the invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the figures which show, for example, embodiments of the lamp. Figs. 1 and 1a show a lamp with a plate-shaped partition, while Figs. 2 and 2a show a lamp with a cylindrical partition, preferably concentric to the electrodes.
In Figure 1, 1 is the glass bulb with a normal lamp holder 4. 2 and 3 are electrodes between which the discharge takes place. The discharge path is lengthened in a manner known per se through the wall 5, which rests firmly against the glass bulb wall with its longitudinal edges. This wall 5 and the inner glass bulb wall are covered with fluorescent material, which is made to glow by the emission of the discharge column. 6 is a plate, for example made of mica, adapted to the cross-section of the glass bulb, which is attached to the pinch foot 7 of the lamp and through which the supply lines 8 and 9, which at the same time serve as holders for the electrodes 2 and 3, are passed. On this record is also the partition 5 supported. The joint between wall 5 and plate 6 is advantageously smeared with insulating compound in order not to give the discharge a side path. From Fig. 1a, which shows a plan view of the lamp system, the shape of the electrodes 2 and 3 can be seen, which for example have a semicircular cross-section. It is advantageous to arrange ribs in the form of straight or corrugated sheet-metal or zigzag-shaped sheets on the inner walls of the electrodes. In the example shown, sheets bent in the shape of a corrugated sheet are attached to the inner walls of the electrodes. However, differently shaped electrodes, for example box-shaped electrodes, which are likewise covered on the inside with ribs, as already indicated above, can also be used.
In Abb. 2 bzw. In Fig. 2 or 2a, 10 is the cylindrical partition, for example made of glass, which is covered with fluorescent material on the inside and outside, as is the inner glass bulb wall. 11 and 12 are cylindrical electrodes. These are advantageously made from corrugated sheet metal instead of smooth sheet metal. A circular cylinder shape is not absolutely necessary. For example, the inner electrode 12 can also have a box-shaped cross section. It is also advantageous to arrange the two electrodes in relation to one another in such a way that they do not enclose one another, ie, as shown, not at the same height, but on top of one another, which is particularly advantageous in terms of high-frequency heating in the manufacture of the lamp has proven.
The lamps according to the invention produce a light output that is approximately 20-30% higher.
