Jewellery chain element in spiral form, consisting of a chain-shaped precious metal spiral 3 and a core made of a stainless steel spiral 2 with an internal stainless steel wire 1.

State of the art with reference 1:

A spiral-shaped jewelry chain element is known under DE 4003790 C2.

In this jewelry chain element, the core consists of at least two metal strands that are parallel to each other or twisted against each other, so that only essentially point-shaped contact surfaces are formed between each strand and the surrounding outer precious metal wire, which ensure a high degree of flexibility and allow for a very delicate design. One or more precious metal wires are wound around this core.

Problem:

1. This delicate jewelry chain element sags when one or more solid pendants are strung together.

2. The jewelry chain element becomes too rigid if you want to achieve a larger spiral diameter, because you would have to use too many or too thick strands as the core.

Problem:

1. This jewelry chain element sags when one or more massive pendants are attached to it.

2. The closure cannot be firmly connected to the spiral using metal. It must be pressed on to ensure a secure hold. This means that repair is not possible without destroying the closure and damaging the spiral.

3. The jewelry chain element cannot be subsequently disassembled into its individual parts and reassembled - e.g. for repair purposes - because the precious metal wire is tightly wound around the core.

Problem solution: (Execution: Figure 1)

The task is to design a spiral-shaped jewelry chain element that is characterized by the following properties:

1. The jewelry chain element must have a consistent choker shape when closed, it must not sag when one or more solid pendants are strung together and it must straighten again after the clasp is opened so that the pendants can be strung together or removed without any problem.

2. The jewellery chain element must allow for a stronger design in terms of the spiral diameter without becoming too rigid.

3. The jewelry chain element must be repairable.

In order to meet these requirements, a change is required in that a stainless steel wire 1 is run in a relaxed but not stretched stainless steel spiral 2, which is firmly connected metallically to the stainless steel spiral at both ends.

This core has an outer diameter that is designed in such a way that it can be inserted into an outer precious metal spiral 3. It is firmly connected to the precious metal spiral 3 at one end, which is tensioned and, in a permanently tensioned state, firmly connected to the stainless steel core at the other end.

Benefits achieved:

The resulting jewelry chain element is stabilized from the inside by the core without being too rigid and yet so flexible that it takes on a hoop shape when the clasp is closed without sagging when one or more solid pendants are strung on it.

The jewelry chain element is protected against external pressure by the core, like an "inner armor".

The design of this jewelry chain element enables a solid metal connection with the clasp, which in turn makes repairs and subsequent reuse of the clasp possible.

A stronger stainless steel wire 1 is inserted into a stainless steel spiral 2 with a larger diameter than in Figure 1 so that it protrudes generously on both sides.

A precious metal hinge approximately 0.5 cm long is threaded onto each of these two sides, which has the same outer diameter as the stainless steel spiral 2. The inner diameter of the hinge 4 must be such that the stainless steel wire 1 can be inserted exactly. The precious metal hinge 4 is now firmly connected to the stainless steel wire 1 at both ends directly at the connection to the stainless steel spiral 2, whereby the stainless steel spiral 2 is relaxed but must not be stretched.

The precious metal spiral 3 is firmly connected to the precious metal hinge 4 on one side.

After the exact length has been adjusted, the precious metal spiral 3 is pushed together and, while remaining taut, is firmly connected to the precious metal hinge 4 at the other end of the core. In this way, the stainless steel wire 1 runs centrally.

After soldering on the clasp, you have a spiral-shaped jewelry chain element with a larger diameter, which can hold massive pendants in a ring-like shape when closed without sagging. This jewelry chain element is not too rigid, unlike other spirals filled with stainless steel strands, and can easily hold pendants when opened, with the "inner armor" protecting it from external pressure.

For repair purposes, the jewelry chain element can be disassembled into its individual parts and reassembled.
