gelangen.Process for the preparation of diacetone-2-keto-l-gulonic acid It is
known that diacetone-l-sorbose with chemical oxidizing agents such as KaHumpermapganatoder
Chlorine can be oxidized in alkaline solution to diacetone-2-ketogulonic acid. For
these oxidation processes require considerable amounts of oxidizing agents,
which makes the process very expensive and foreign dietary fiber in the reaction mixture
reach.
It has now been found that diacetone-2-ketogulonic acid is significantly cheaper

The precious metals, especially platinum deposited on coal, are suitable. the
Oxidation is expediently carried out in a weakly alkaline solution, at pH 7.5 to io,
where, for the p $ setting, salts of weak acids or mixtures of such salts
can be added as a buffer. The catalytic one takes place in a neutral solution

of acetone enters.
so
It has already been proposed to produce 2-keto-1-gulonic acid directly from 1-sorbose by oxidation with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases in the presence of an oxygen-transferring noble metal catalyst, preferably platinum carbon. In this case, however, 2-ketogulonic acid is only produced in a yield of about 50%, while the rest of the sorbose is largely broken down into various smaller molecules. It was not to be expected that such a mildly acting oxidizing agent as catalytically excited oxygen would have a sufficiently oxidizing effect on the diacetone-1-sorbose, which is protected by the acetone residues and therefore difficult to attack, to convert it into diacetone-2-ketogulonic acid. It was therefore surprising that in this way diacetone-2-ketogulonic acid is obtained in pure form, without contaminating by -products, in yields of 95% and above.
The rate of the reaction can be increased by increasing the reaction temperature
increase accordingly to the catalytic oxidation. It is expedient to work at temperatures
between I.o and 7o °. The oxidation is carried out in such a way that an aqueous solution
of diacetone-l-sorbose in the presence of platinum carbon at a pg of 7.5 to zo
with oxygen or gases containing oxygen at normal or elevated pressure
high temperature (4o to 6o °) mixes intimately. The solution becomes discolored
not a.
The duration of the oxidation depends on the temperature and the p $ of the solution
and the concentration of diacetone-l-sorbose. The platinum coal, which one
Part of the diacetone sorbose adsorbed can be used for further oxidation.
Diaceton-l-sorbose.To isolate the diacetone-2-keto-l-gulonic acid, the reaction mixture is filtered off from the catalyst, the unreacted diacetone-l-sorbose is separated from the oxidation product and, after the aqueous solution has been concentrated, the diacetone-2-keto-l-gulonic acid with hydrochloric acid failed. An almost analytically pure, colorless diacetone-2-keto-l-gulonic acid is obtained in a yield of up to 95 % of theory, calculated on the converted diacetone-l-sorbose.
