Description
Process for Purification of Alcohols The invention relates to purification of alcohols and their aqueous solutions, especially bad for the purpose of removal smelling impurities.
It is well known that the highly water-soluble alcohols with 1 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule, mainly those produced by hydration of monoolefins in the presence of an acidic catalyst, are often contaminated with bad-smelling substances that make the finished product unsaleable or limit its sales. This applies in particular to the alcohols which are produced by the hydration of olefins using sulfuric acid as a catalyst; this process is currently used for the industrial production of ethanol and isopropanol from ethylene and propylene.
It has been found that alcohol contaminated with malodorous compounds is deodorized by bringing it, as such or in the form of aqueous solutions, into intimate contact with finely divided sand. River sand, blown sand, gravel such as pea gravel and Ottawa sand, etc., are particularly effective. First and foremost, a sand with a particle size of less than 30 mesh is used. A particle size of more than 310 mesh is also useful, but with less pronounced effect. Particles from 4 to: 20 mesh are preferred, but coarser material also proves to be useful. The sand does not need any pre-treatment before use. Sands have surprisingly been found to be effective in improving the odor of alcohols, although other solid adsorbents of similar nature, such as active silica gel, silica, diatomaceous earth, asbestos, do not improve the quality of the alcohol in any way.
The odorous substances that are associated with the alcohols, namely with those obtained by sulfuric acid hydration of monoolefins, form two 'sicli' groups that clearly differ from one another. The first group is known in the trade as recycle odor. It is usually a volatile odor, which is associated with low-boiling sulfur compounds, such as mercaptans, thioaldehydes, etc. It is believed that these low-boiling sulfur compounds are derived from the decomposition of a higher-boiling parent compound which gives off the sulfur compound and also a hydrocarbon. Therefore, a hydrocarbon odor is usually always associated with the return odor. The second group is called butyl odor. This is understood to mean a strong hydrocarbon odor, which is attributed to the occurrence of so-called high-boiling compounds in alcohol. These include high-boiling hydrocarbons, high-boiling oxygen-containing compounds and high-boiling sulfur compounds. It has now been found that the treatment of alcohol with sand completely removes the return odor and in all cases reduces the intensity of the butyl odor.
The odorous substances: containing '# alcohol is brought liquid or dampfförrnig with finely divided sand in --innige contact, preferably in' the liquid phase. For the treatment in the liquid phase, two methods are used. Preference is given, namely passage of alcohol under the effect of its own gravity through a bed of sand or passage of the liquid alcohol through the bed of sand by means of a pump. According to a further embodiment, alcohol and sand are mixed with stirring and then the alcohol is separated from the mixture by treatment in a filter press, or by allowing it to settle and decanting.
However, this procedure is the same as the continuous process of liquid alcohol not preferred by a bed of sand, which is best operated continuously. The alcohol is heated to above the boiling point for operation in the steam chamber and percolates the vapors through a layer of sand.
If the bad odorous substances are only incompletely removed, the flow rate of the liquid through the sand is reduced, the thickness or number of layers is increased and / or the flow of alcohol through the sand is repeated. The throughput speed can be set at 0.5 to 50 rough parts of alcohol per minute part of sand per hour. The preferred speed is generally 2 to -o parts of space per part of space per hour.
The mechanism of the cleaning process is not known. One took suggest that sand is not only reducing the bad smelling impurities, but also reducing them Substances removed from the alcohol. Show alcohols filtered through a bed of sand a marked improvement in permanganate time, which is a measure of the content of reducing substances. Return odor may be caused by reducing Substances. The butyl smell of the alcohol is also improved, and the substances The carriers of the butyl odor are not necessarily reducing substances. The permanganate time to test the treated alcohols is the USP method; these is a time measure in minutes for o, i ccm of an o, i n-KMnO47 solution at 15 'to get a to make the slight pink color disappear '. the shorter the permanganate time iii minutes is, -the lower the quality of the alcohol, what the presence of reducing substances.
According to previous experience, the sand does not need to be regenerated because no adverse effect was observed with the continuous treatment of alcohol with sand. During a continuous period of 40 days of operation, approximately 3.78 million gallons of malodorous isopropanol was deodorized using sand filtration. After this time the sand was still operational. It was also found that an alcohol with an extremely poor odor quality experiences a considerable increase in quality when passing through a bed of sand. Immediately afterwards, a more refined alcohol with less bad odor properties was sent through the same sand bed and also paid for, namely with regard to the odor properties. If necessary, the sand can be removed using simple means, e.g. B. reactivated by washing with water, aeration or mere movement of the sand in the bed. Regeneration is less of an option because of the low price and the easy availability of sand.
The shape and edge hardness of the sand particles are not essential Influence on the activity of the sand. Blown sand, which is particularly rough and sharp-edged is, as well as Ottawa sand, an extremely smooth and round material, both make good Results.
It has been found so far that any malodorous alcohol, regardless of the level of refinement, will be improved when treated with sand in accordance with the invention. Even good alcohol reacts favorably. The alcohol does not require any further treatment after passing through the sand and can be put into storage immediately. According to the following tables, which show the results of experimental work and their results, alcohols are classified as follows: Grade i: Alcohol without foreign odorous substances, Grade 2: Alcohol with very few foreign odorous substances, Grade 3: Alcohol with a moderate odor, Grade 4: Alcohol with considerable to very strong amounts of odorous substances.
The effect of sand in removing runback and butyl odor from alcohols can be seen in the tables below. Table i shows the increase in quality of a very bad smelling alcohol which is contaminated with return and hydrocarbon odorous substances. Table - gives the results of treating a less malodorous alcohol contaminated with reflux and hydrocarbon odorants. Table 3 shows the result of the treatment of an alcohol heavily contaminated with butyl odorous substances.
Similar results are obtained when ethanol is treated by intimate contact with finely divided sand (Table 4). - Table 5 gives a picture of the effect of sand in improving the permanganate time of the treated alcohols.
