Acoustic guidance device for the blind that works according to the echo sounding method
In order to make it easier for the blind to orientate themselves in space, it has already been proposed that
the presence of obstacles and their position in relation to the blind by acoustic means
established in a similar way as it occurs in nature during the night flight of the bat
is pre-trained or as it is already in the technology by the localization in the sea
and air traffic has become suspected. About the distance
The binding of the reflective objects to be perceptibly indicated is suggested
been; the distance can be perceived by acoustic signs of different pitches
to make while the direction mechanically -by turning the accordingly- sharp
directed transmitter is determined.
in folgender Weise erzielt: Die vom Ultraschallsender ausgesandten Schallimpulse
i m genähert hat.
Schalleindrücken, verhältnismäßig unabhängig vom Intensitätsverhältnis an beiden
Ohren ist.A distance display that is particularly well adapted to the purpose of guiding the blind can be achieved by utilizing the ability of the human auditory organ known as the binaural effect to perceive the distance from obstacles in the path of the blind person - temporal differences in the arrival of sound impulses at both ears to be perceived as an impression of direction. For the blind, it is less a matter of recognizing exactly whether an object is located 5 or 10 m away than it is to notice clearly whether an obstacle is in dangerous proximity. The display must expediently take the form of an obvious warning signal, for example if the obstacle is at a distance of z or 2 m in front of the blind person, so that he can easily convince himself of the presence of the obstacle by stretching out his arm and touching it. This possibility of a warning signal for a dangerous approach to an obstacle is achieved by utilizing the binaural effect when listening to the echo effects in the following way: According to the invention, the sound pulses emitted by the ultrasonic transmitter are only picked up by an echo receiver after their reflection on existing obstacles and only fed to one ear of the blind person and there brought to perception. The other ear, on the other hand, is directly excited by electrical impulses which, with the interposition of a certain delay, cause a telephone receiver to emit corresponding sound impulses. The echo pulse on one ear and the generation of the corresponding sound pulse on the other ear merge as a result of the binaural effect to form a uniform sound image, which, depending on the time difference with which the right and left ears are excited by the corresponding pulses, is more or less right or less is felt on the left side. If, for example, the delay time that is switched into the circuit of a telephone receiver is dimensioned so that it corresponds to a sound path difference of 2 m, i.e. . H. an echo distance from im, and if this telephone receiver is connected to the left ear, all reflecting objects that are at a greater distance than in front of the blind person will be heard on the left side. If the blind person approaches a reflecting object up to about im, so ,. loading. Suddenly this impression of direction girint to wander from the left sideways to the middle; the middle impression is reached when the object is in front of the blind person, and then moves to the right as soon as the blind person approaches the object further. This wandering of the directional impression from the left sideways across the middle to the right. laterally takes place very quickly in the critical situation, namely when the distance of the reflecting object changes to 90 cm in front of i, io m. This sudden jump in the directional impression from left to right is perceived by the blind as an obvious warning sign that the object is in the immediate vicinity in front of him. As long as objects are at a very great distance so that they cannot excite the echo receiver to a noticeable volume, only the operation of the device is perceived by a sound impulse perceived at one ear at regular intervals. If an obstacle comes into the effective area of the device; ie if the echo receiver connected to the other ear is so strongly excited that an audible impulse is given to the other ear, this is noticeable laterally by the sound image perceived in the left ear jumping out to the left. This left-sidedness remains until the blind person has approached the object at about im. Differences in intensity in the excitation of the two ears do not have much impact, since the binaural effect, especially in the case of low-frequency sound impressions, is relatively independent of the intensity ratio in both ears.
wahrnehmen. The device is expediently made in such a way that the delay time
which is switched into the circuit of the directly excited telephone receiver, optionally
can be switched on and off or its length can be changed. That way it is
the blind man possible to himself the distance at which he is the warning sign of one
reflective object wants to be able to adjust itself. Will the delay time
completely switched off and .the corresponding telephone receiver with a second echo receiver,
which is at a certain horizontal distance from the first echo receiver,
connected, the device can be used as a normal binaural hearing aid, i.
H. the blind can then hear the directions of sound as in natural, free-eared hearing
feel immediately and the objects according to their lateral position in space
perceive.
vorn gerichteten Sektors 3 ausgesandt.
The invention should be explained in more detail with reference to the schematic drawing

q. connected to an echo receiver 5, while the left ear through the telephone receiver

that it corresponds to an echo path of i m. If the Generator.2 has an electric

will. If the blind person approaches the obstacle further, this is the case
at 8b at a distance of about 1 m, the sound image travels sideways from the left
about middle suddenly to the right sideways, since the time difference between the excitation
of the echo receiver 5 and the left ear 6 of the observer becomes less and less and
has become zero when the distance from i m is reached. -On further approach

is now on the right. The transition from what was originally perceived as the left side

to the right laterally
erratic and easily perceptible for the blind, so that it acts as a warning signal
for approaching the obstacle is felt.
