Dies kann erfindungsgemäß dadurch verhindert werden, wenn man die eigentliche Kathode mit einem Zylinder umgibt, der je nach Kathodendurchmesser einige Millimeter bis einige "Zentimeter länger als die Kathode gehalten wird und der mit der Kathode leitend verbunden sein kann. Die Kathode selbst bildet man zweckmäßig, um eine große Oberfläche zu erhalten, sternförmig, spiralförmig, gitterförmig oder ähnlich aus. Das Kathodenglimmlicht bildet sich bei diesen Kathoden in den Hohlräumen der Kathode aus, ohne auf den äußeren Zylinder überzugreifen. Da die Wandungen der Hohlräume nur geringen Abstand voneinander haben, schlägt sich das von einer Wand abgedampfte Kathodenmaterial auf der gegenüberliegenden Wand wieder nieder, ohne in die Röhre zu gelangen.
