Bei den Selbstschaltern bisheriger Bauart waren die Schaltkontakte und der Schaltmechanismus für (las Ein- und Ausschalten im allgemeinen in einer Ebene angeordnet. Diese Ausführung hat jedoch den Nachteil, (laß die Trennung zwischen der Funkenkammer und dem eigentlichen Schaltmechaqismus nicht ganz leicht ist. Außerdem ist die räumliche Anordnung verhältnismäßig ungünstig, denn es ist hierdurch nicht möglich, ein kompaktes Schaltergehäuse zu konstruieren, sondern man erhält in der Regel schmale und lange Gebilde, die ungünstig im Gebrauch sind. Man hat daher bei neueren Konstruktionen vielfach versucht, das den Schaltmechanismus bildende Schaltschloß und die Kontakteinrichtung nebeneinander anzuordnen. Der Aufbau war dann im wesentlichen so, daß die Hebel für die Schaltkontakte sowie die für die Schaltorgane des Schaltschlosses auf besonderen Achsen angeordnet wurden, an deren Enden geeignete t`bertragungsorgane saßen.
