PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
KLASSE 42: Instromente.CLASS 42: Instruments.
In the manufacture of thermometers for chemical work, especially for use In the case of fractional distillation, two opposing requirements emerge: on the one hand The thermometer must cover as many degrees as possible, on the other hand it should be as short as possible so that the mercury thread is entirely in the vapor of the distilling liquid. Since in the ordinary form of the thermometer these two opposed to each other Requirements can only be met to a very limited extent, it was felt compelled to take a detour Achieve the goal by either using the thermometer scale according to Anschütz's suggestion distributed over several separate thermometers, or by interrupting the thermometer capillary (by expanding it in certain places) transformed the ordinary thermometer into a fractional thermometer, on which only certain parts of the whole scale are present. Have these thermometers According to the inventor, the following disadvantages: The break thermometer only works apply in special cases; the Anschützian As is well known, the thermometer can be used in all cases, but it has the disadvantage that it is somewhat cumbersome to use is because with every change of the individual thermometers the fractionation increases to a certain extent Time must be interrupted. In addition, almost all forms known up to now should be the thermometer suffer from the inconvenience that part of the scale in the stopper is mean whose thermometer is fastened in the still remains hidden, so that if the degree at which the boiling point of the liquid happens to be hidden Distillation is made difficult.
All these disadvantages are to be eliminated if the thermometer is given the forms shown in the accompanying drawing (Figs. 1, 2 and 3). The novelty of these thermometers is that the capillary d does not run up in a straight line, but rises either in a zigzag (Figs. 1 and 2) or helically (Fig. 3). In the first case, the capillary lies in a plane on which the scale c, corresponding to the turns, is attached in the usual way. In the second case the capillary is evenly wound around a hollow or solid cylinder c made of milk glass, and the thermometer scale is plotted on this cylinder itself according to the windings. The thermometer capillary can either lie on the surface of the cylinder or, even better, in a corresponding groove in the cylinder.
Durch Vergröfserung des Durchmessers der Thermometerröhre oder durch Zusammenschieben der Windungen der Capillarröhre gegen einander lassen sich diese Thermometer so kurz anfertigen, dafs ihre ganze Capillare einen nur ganz kleinen Theil von der Länge der ThermometerröhreThe changes to the thermometer indicated above are intended to result in both of the above-mentioned changes Realize the requirements of the thermometer on a much larger scale, than has been the case until now. By increasing the diameter of the thermometer tube or by pushing the turns of the capillary tube together against each other make these thermometers so briefly that their whole capillary is only a very small one Partly the length of the thermometer tube
einnimmt. In this way it is achieved that when fractionating the whole capillary is in the fractionating flask comes to lie under the fastening stopper, thus completely in the vapor of the distilling Liquid is located.
So that the thermometer can always be set in the correct position in the flask when fractionating in flasks with long or short necks, it is provided with a longer stem b made of glass tube, which, for convenience, has a smaller diameter than the actual tube a of the thermometer.
