Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The purpose of the process is to produce ferric chloride in a transportable and suitable form for the treatment of flushing water from abortions etc. and other unclean waters. To carry out the invention, the iron chloride is crystallized together with sulfuric acid Baking soda (Glauber's salt); the latter protects the ferric chloride from the dissolving influence the atmosphere.
The operation is carried out as follows: One takes sodium chloride and mixes it intimately with so much finely powdered iron oxide that the iron is sufficient to bind all the chlorine present in the sodium chloride and thereby produce iron chloride. Ordinary salt (evaporated salt) is used as sodium chloride, which has been heated until it is completely dry. The iron oxide, whatever its origin, is dried and crushed, after which both are mixed together in a fine state with the aid of suitable mixing and sieving machines, namely in the ratio of 250 parts sodium chloride to 100 parts iron oxide (Fe 2 O S J or to such a weight of a substance from which the iron oxide can be obtained in the said amount of 100 parts. When the ingredients are thoroughly mixed with one another, water is added in sufficient quantity to bring the mixture into the consistency of a thin dough, whereupon A fine stream of sulfuric acid is allowed to flow over the dough-like mass, which must be kept in constant motion until the required amount of acid has been added. 225 parts of sulfuric acid are added to the above proportions of salt and iron oxide (H. 2 SO 11 J. The acid combines with the sodium of the sodium chloride and forms sodium sulphate (Na 2 SO 4 ) It is therefore advisable to mix the mixture while the acid is being added to prevent premature compaction of the mass. The mixture is then poured into molds. Wood, iron or the like, place them in an oven and heat to about 100 ° C. until the mixture has solidified. Once this state has been reached, the temperature is increased to 150 to 180 ° C. and is maintained at this level until the mass in the molds has turned yellow; this color indicates the formation of ferric chloride. The material is now ready for the market.
The second heating seems to transform the compound formed first (Na HSO 4 J into sulphate of soda (Na 2 SO 4 J. The latter locks the ferric chloride in itself, and a mass is formed which, when exposed to moisture, does not dissolve whereby a product containing the ferric chloride is achieved which enables safe, easy transportation and convenient handling of ferric chloride during use.
The iron oxide to be used can either be the ordinary hematite iron ore, the Limonite or brown iron stone, the calcined and thoroughly oxidized late iron stone, or Iron carbonate, roasted or burnt iron pyrite etc.
Das Verfahren beschränkt sich nicht auf irgend ein genaues Mischungsverhältnifs, daThe method is not limited to any precise mixing ratio, as
man dasselbe bis zu einem gewissen Grade verändern kann, ohne ein wesentlich anderes Product zu erhalten oder die Eigenschaften desselben, sehr zu beeinflussen.one can change the same thing to a certain extent without an essentially different one To maintain the product or to greatly influence the properties of the same.
As an example, below is a second relationship from which I have perceived that it gives good results, namely:
Chlornatrium 351 Theile,Sodium chloride 351 parts,
Eisenoxyd 160Iron oxide 160
Schwefelsäure 294Sulfuric acid 294
Wasser 200Water 200
The procedure is the same as described above. The product contains ferric chloride In transportable and such a form that is far more convenient to handle than that previous preparations of iron chloride, as they have been used up to now for the treatment of waste water etc. brings to use.
After a modification of the process, one uses a concentrated solution of sulphate of soda (Na 2 S O 4 + ι ο H 2 O), and gives it an addition of more or less concentrated ferric chloride solution in an appropriate proportion, whereupon the whole is thoroughly mixed with one another. The mixture is then concentrated until the sodium sulphate is crystallized, and shaped or solidified. Once this has been done, the product is ready for trading.
For the treatment of the wastewater from closets and so on, panels or blocks of the Products manufactured according to one or the other process into the drainage pipe bring; the water flowing through it dissolves the table, gradually removing the ferric chloride becomes free. If it is necessary to use the product in powder form, then so the blocks can also be crushed to the desired degree.
