KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
Laugen.Alkalis.
The processing of tartaric acid lye, which contains more or less clay and iron are enriched, presents considerable difficulties in technical operations. Is the clay content a significant one, further processing in the usual manufacturing way can become impossible. It succeeds not, by precipitation of the tartaric acid in the form of its calcium salt, the annoying iron and to get rid of clay compounds: they rather fall at the same time as the tartaric lime and when it is decomposed, be it by sulfuric acid or by carbonate of alkali, go completely (alumina) or partly (iron) again in solution, restoring it to its previous dilute state.
In the end, numerous attempts aimed at eliminating this deficiency resulted to the result that a perfect separation of the alumina and iron on what was previously unknown The property of magnesia determined on this occasion, from the properties determined by Kali respectively Soda or its carbonates alkaline alkaline solutions in the alumina quantitatively Form of a hydrate magnesia aluminate precipitate respectively. withhold, being present Iron also goes almost completely into the precipitation.
Die Ausführung des hierauf gegründeten Verfahrens gestaltet sich in der Praxis folgendermafsen: The procedure based on this is carried out in practice as follows:
The lyes to be processed are made with so much chlorine magnesium - or other magnesia salts - to move that to at least one part by weight of existing clay two parts of magnesia are omitted. Then either the entire tartaric acid is in shape the lime salt is precipitated in a known manner by means of quicklime, calcium chloride, etc., and then precipitated the product of precipitation, which, in addition to lime and magnesia, is the total amount of what is present Contains iron and clay, either directly in the liquid or after its separation of the liquid with potassium or sodium carbonate in sufficient quantity to decompose cooked. Or by bypassing the lime precipitation in the above manner with magnesium chloride mixed lye cooked directly with potash or soda.
The easily filterable precipitate of the carbonate alkaline earths and the earths The separate solution contains all of the tartaric acid as tartaric alkali and is absolute free of clay and apart from insignificant traces also free of iron. For the purposes In tartaric acid production, the lyes purified in this way become after weak acidification with the still falling from the decomposition of the tartaric lime in the main plant moist gypsum is digested in the warmth and the resulting iron- and clay-free tartaric acid Lime returned to the main plant. Also stand for the tartar depictions suitable methods are available.
Those often present in tartaric liquors, but always in minor amounts Ammonia salts do not interfere with the separation by the main reaction.
For the essence of the new procedure, it is irrelevant in which form and in which Place the addition of the magnesia compounds takes place. So z. B. the one chosen for precipitation Caustic lime may already be partially dolomitic in nature, or, if not lye, but a tartaric lime contaminated with clay and iron for processing is present, soaked the same with magnesium chloride in the amount specified above and then subject to decomposition by solid alkali carbonate. The separation is also successful of clay and iron likewise, if partly or wholly in place of the Carbonates the hydrates of the solid alkalis are used.
That the basis of the above procedure also provides a desirable means of achieving this up to then very difficult correct analytical determination of the tartaric acid in the with Alumina and iron contaminated raw materials and alkalis, as well as for determination the clay and iron itself in these alkalis are only mentioned in passing.
Analytische Belege,
ι. Ein Gemisch vonAnalytical evidence,
ι. A mixture of
Weinsäure 2,000 g,Tartaric acid 2,000 g,
Alaun 1,000 g,Alum 1,000 g,
mit 100 ecm Wasser und ca. 4 g Kaliumcarbonat
zum Sieden erhitzt, blieb klar.
2. Ein Gemisch vonHeated to the boil with 100 ecm of water and approx. 4 g of potassium carbonate, remained clear.
2. A mixture of
Weinsäure 2,000 g,Tartaric acid 2,000 g,
Alaun . . · 1,000 g,Alum. . 1,000 g,
Mg Cl2 -\- 6 aq . . . 1,000 g
Heated to the boil with 100 ecm of water and approx. 4 g of potassium carbonate, resulted in abundant precipitation, which was separated from the solution by filtration and washing:
Es resultirtena) the precipitate remaining on the filter was dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid and this solution is literally precipitated while boiling by means of ammonia. It resulted
0,114 g Al2O3
statt 0,111 g0.114 g Al 2 O 3
instead of 0.111 g
direct in 1,000 g des Alauns gefundener Thonerde. Das Plus rührt von Spuren von MgO her;Clay found directly in 1,000 g of alum. The plus comes from traces of MgO ;
Die Titration ergab 0,997 g Weinsäure statt 1,000 g der angewendeten.b) the filtrate was halved and in one half the tartaric acid was used as tartar deposited in the usual way (modified by us). The titration gave 0.997 g of tartaric acid instead of 1,000 g of the applied.
In the other part of the filtrate no clay could in any way (by ashing, etc.) be detected.
If the experiment under 2. was repeated with the addition of 0.2 g of salmiac, the was Exactly the same process: in this case, too, there was no trace of alumina in the filtrate be detected.
If tartaric acid, alum, iron chloride and iron oxy sulfate were heated in a common solution with excess sodium carbonate in an analogous manner, the solution remained clear, and thus contained all the clay and all iron dissolved. If the experiment was repeated in the same way, but with the addition of Mg Cl 2 -f- 6 aq , the solution obtained by filtration was found to be free of alumina and essentially free of iron; with yellow and red blood-liquor salt, only traces of it could be detected after acidification.
The precipitate formed by the magnesia clay iron precipitation is through moderately concentrated potash or Caustic soda does not decompose. The precipitation occurs in the same Wise, if from the outset a smaller or larger part of the alkali is more caustic Form rather than carbonate formation. In these circumstances even will the iron is separated even more completely than by solid alkali carbonate alone.
The following should be mentioned to justify the last sentence of our patent description :
In einem sogen, »weinsauren Kalke« des Handels, der stark mit Thonerdeverbindungen verunreinigt war, fanden wir und andere Chemiker nach dem üblichen VerfahrenIn a so-called "tartaric lime" of the trade, which is strong with alumina compounds was contaminated, we and other chemists found by the usual procedure
3,26 pCt. Weinsäure,3.26 pCt. Tartaric acid,
20,0 pCt. Weinsäure. On the other hand, the magnesia separation carried out according to our new process yielded
20.0 pct. Tartaric acid.
