Attempts have already been made to use the heat lost in the coke ovens to in order to heat the air necessary for the combustion of the escaping gases and in this way a more efficient combustion to bring about (see Percy-Wedding Metallurgie, Vol. I, p. 182 ff.).

The present invention is now a new device to the combustion the air necessary for the escaping gases to a particularly high degree of temperature beforehand by using the air that is already heated to cool the floor special canals through the hot walls of the furnace heated higher and then used to burn the gases.

The cold air used for cooling falls through the chimneys a or through the dotted openings α α in the floor ducts b, and draws under the entire length of the coke oven battery. At the end of the coke ovens, the air stream divides and goes through the channels c on the front and back of the ovens back into the outflow chimneys d. With the new device, the hot air is now to be conducted in this way out of the channels c through special vertical pipes e cut out in the partition walls of the individual coke ovens and / into the horizontal channels g .

The hot air emerges from the pipes e through the inclined openings α into the horizontal ducts g; from the pipes / through the small horizontal connecting channels β straight there. .

The channels g are separated from each other in the middle of the length of the coke oven at h in order to make the air supply more independent of the respective wind direction.

The hot air flows in channel g from the long sides of the battery towards the center, where it enters channels k through two horizontal connecting channels i.

From these channels k the hot air is fed through small openings γ to the coke oven gases flowing into the exhaust pipes . An air hole γ is used for each gas pipe /.

In both channels β and i there are sliders at S and ε so that the air can be regulated as desired.

The chimneys d are fitted with sliders in order to help regulate the required quantity of combustion air through their position.

In addition to the air heating through the floor ducts, this also takes place in the ducts m η and ο , which are installed in the vaults of the ovens and are in direct contact with the outside air at the heads of the ovens. These can be closed by clay plugs on both sides of the coke ovens.

The cross-section of these channels can of course not be significant, and can therefore they give me little air. · They therefore serve subordinate purposes.

The channel m is connected to the channel g through the opening ν. He should supply the hot air when the coking process is almost complete, the slide is completely closed at δ and the slide is only slightly open at ε.

The channels η and 0 lead the hot air into the horizontal channel p, which is connected to the furnace space itself through small openings r.

In general, as little air as possible should be fed into the furnace space. At the beginning the coking, however, develops an excess of gases, which the furnace masonry, especially from the vault, withdraws heat.
