,auch von freiwillig verlaufenden. Amalgamationen gab, beispielsweise der Goldamalgamation;
Process for the electrolysis of zinc lye containing arsenic and / or antimony
- Using an amalgam cathode It is known that one paus zinc-containing
Lyes can be used to produce amalgams by using these lyes against mercury electrodes
electrolyzed. Such an electrolysis differs from the usual ones
Zinc electrolyses and others by the fact that the purity of the alkaline solutions has only low requirements
; need to be asked. While with the otherwise common zinc metal electrolysis
small amounts of. z. B. nickel, cobalt, copper, iron and lead already extraordinary
have a disturbing effect and alkalis that are contaminated with them, before they are used in
zinc amalgam electrolysis
of these impurities, even if they are present in large amounts, largely
independent. This property of the zinc amalgam cathodes enhances the electrolytic production of zinc amalgam
, including those that run voluntarily. Were amalgamations, for example gold amalgamation;
this is known to be the absence of base metals in a dignified form
or as a sulphide or in easily decomposable compounds in general,
while the electrolytic production of zinc amalgams by 'metals, which are less noble
.as zinc, or is not disturbed at all by their compounds.
The amalgam formed during electrolysis is silver-white and different
hardly differing in appearance from ordinary mercury; only with increasing
Concentration of zinc gives it a pulpy consistency. The formation of the amalgam during
the electrolysis @ takes place at higher temperatures; # the technically usual current densities
and alkali concentrations mostly completely steady and undisturbed, even in the presence
of impurities that result from the usual zinc electrolysis with rigid cathodes
completely exclude technically satisfactory work. In some cases it will
however an inhibition of the
Amalgam formation observed, taking a
dark colored, very finely distributed zinc sludge; on the mercury surface
forms, hydrogen is developed .and .the electricity yields drop sharply.
The sludge can clog the cells and cause short circuits, and it lets itself go
: In addition, hardly process on leg zinc.
enthalten ist oder zu diesem Zweck erst zugegeben wird, als Ferrihydroxyd ausfällt;
It has been found that these malfunctions can be eliminated by
that the zinc salt liquors coming to the electrolysis are mixed with substances which
Precipitate arsenic and / or antimony compounds and / or acidify the lyes.
The precipitation can e.g. B. done by Ferrieisen in the lye
is contained or is only added for this purpose when ferric hydroxide precipitates;
in the case of acidification, it is expedient not to have a certain acidity, et-, va
pH = i, since the current yields drop somewhat in the more acidic medium.
Beispiel i Eine neutrale kochsalzhaltige Chlorzinklauge mit
einer Stromausbeute von 9S% ein q.o/oiges Amalgam.EXAMPLE i A neutral sodium chloride-containing zinc chloride solution with 0.03 g per liter of arsenic and 0.04 g per liter of antimony gives a current yield of only 71% in an electrolysis test on an amalgam cathode with strong hydrogen evolution and the formation of zinc sludge; Excess ferric chloride solution is then added to the same lye, and the iron is then precipitated again by adding lime. The lye, filtered warm, is electrolyzed in the usual way in amalgam cells and gives a q / o amalgam with a current efficiency of 91%.
Salzsäure auf einen Säuregehalt von o, i normal gebracht und b=ei 58° elektrolysiert;
die Stromausb@eut:e .beträgt 970/0.Example z A neutral, saline lye with 0.02 g per liter
Arsenic, which in an electrolysis test on an amalgam cathode with strong hydrogen evolution
and formation of zinc sludge gives a current efficiency of only 750/0, is by
Hydrochloric acid brought to an acid content of o, i normal and b = ei 58 ° electrolyzed;
the current output: e. is 970/0.
