Use of copper alloys for electrical wiring The invention
refers to bodies with high tensile strength and low specific resistance,
such as B. electrical high-voltage lines, telephone and telegraph wires, slip wires
for electric vehicles, enameled wires, etc.

For the areas of application mentioned, materials are usually used which mainly consist of copper or aluminum, to which metal various other constituents are then added; However, the alloys formed in this way have the disadvantage that the added components, which serve to increase the tensile strength of copper or aluminum, at the same time increase the specific resistance, in some cases very greatly. as can be seen from the table below: Material - Machining Tensile Strength More Specific

Electrolytic Cu .............. soft annealed 22.7 - 24.3 i, 66 / x-cm
According to the present invention, wire-shaped bodies are used for electrical lines, the tensile strength of which is at least half the tensile strength of pure copper, while the specific resistance is of the same order of magnitude as that of copper; According to the invention, the bodies consist of an alloy of 0.02 to 5 % zirconium, the remainder being copper; In this case, pure copper and the alloy according to the invention are to be compared under the same conditions: As can be seen from the table above, the tensile strength of the hard-rolled or drawn copper is considerably greater than that of the soft-annealed electrolytic copper, while the specific resistance, although little, is different. For these reasons, hard-rolled or drawn copper and not annealed copper are used for the above-mentioned applications, if the use of pure copper is possible.
Zirkonium-Kupfer-Legierungen in hart gewalztem öder gezogenem Zustand wesentlich
besitzt. It has now been found that; if deal copper, small amounts of zirconium
are added, various phenomena occur; initially both increases
rolled or drawn as well as soft annealed bodies determine the tensile strength
to a considerable extent, while the specific resistance changes very little.
A soft-annealed alloy of copper with 1/2% zirconium already has it
practically the same properties as pure, hard rolled or drawn copper.
The tensile strength of this alloy is 45.5lrg / mm2, while the specific
Resistance I, 7I Y.Q cmist: Same as with pure copper by using hard
rolled or drawn bodies an improvement is achieved; also own the
Zirconium-copper alloys are essential in the hard-rolled or drawn condition
better mechanical properties than in the soft annealed state. So is z. B. at
Addition of one-half of the zirconium for the hard-rolled or drawn condition
the tensile strength is 5.5 kg / mm ', while the specific resistance is r, 97, uD cm.
It makes sense; that the application of the materials according to the present invention
in connection with the areas of application mentioned in the introduction to the description
offers great possibilities, since a material is now available that compares
a very high tensile strength compared to copper with a normal specific resistance
owns.
geringen Prozentsatz an Zirkonium, z.
The use of copper-zirconium alloys has already been proposed for structural parts that are particularly subject to continuous elastic stress and frictional stress, such as, for. B: springs, bearing shells, etc. Here, however, there was no mention of the properties of the copper-zirconium alloy that are essential for the present invention; and moreover it is in the known alloys to copper-zirconium alloys containing zirconium in amounts up to contain about 1 5 °% which Zirkoniummengen are completely unsuitable for the purpose of the present invention: A body according to the present invention provides in a drawn state, the another advantage; that the wires made from it can be drawn out much thinner than the wires or rods made of copper or other copper alloys without intermediate annealing. It has proven particularly advantageous when using thinner wires to use alloys with a low percentage of zirconium, e.g. B. of the order of 0.2% zirconium, - while for bodies with a larger diameter it has been found to be desirable to choose higher percentages, in particular I 1/2 to 3% zirconium.
