Abstract

A seal assembly (10) is disclosed for installation in an annular groove (32) having inner and outer radial surfaces (34-36) interconnected by an axial surface (38). The seal assembly (10) is comprised of a generally annular energizer element (12) formed of an elastomeric material and including a body portion (40) and a generally radially extending sealing lip (74). The seal assembly (10) further comprises a generally annular heel bearing element (14) formed of a generally rigid material. Upon installation of the energizer element (12) and heel bearing element (14) into the annular groove, an annular void (100), generally triangular in cross section, is formed between the two seal elements (12-14). Upon the application of pressure at or above a predetermined pressure limit, the energizer element (12) moves into the annular void (100) drawing at least a portion of the sealing lip (74) into the groove (32) to reduce the axial width of the sealing lip (74) contact area.
