Process for the preparation of alkaline earth silicides subject of the present invention
The invention is a process for the preparation of silicides of alkaline earths, in particular
of calcium silicide, by electrothermal means and consists in the fact that one carbonates
this lets metals and silicon carbide act on one another in the .electric furnace.
The reaction proceeds roughly according to the following equation: CaC0g + 2SiC = CaSi2 + 3C0 where
the calcium can be replaced by strontium or barium in the same way. It
is known to produce alkaline earth silicides by heating lime, quartz and charcoal in the electric
To produce furnace. Other methods are calcium carbide, silica and carbon
or lime, silicon and coal or, finally, just lime or limestone and
Silicon melted together at high temperature. It is also known to metal oxides
or metal oxide ores with silicon carbide or silicone, advantageously with additives
of fluxes, to be reduced in the electric furnace to silicides.
5Ca0+5 Si -2CaSi2+3Ca0.Si02 (z) CaO + SiC =CaSi +CO (2) CaC2 + 2 Si02 -j- 2 C= CaSiz
+4C0 (3) CaO + 2 Si + C - CaSiz + CO (q.)
(s. Gleichung i und ¢).
The known processes can be represented by the following reactions: 5Ca0 + 5 Si -2CaSi2 + 3Ca0.Si02 (z) CaO + SiC = CaSi + CO (2) CaC2 + 2 Si02 -j- 2 C = CaSiz + 4C0 (3) CaO + 2 Si + C - CaSiz + CO (q.) The present invention differs from these known processes in that very specific starting materials and reducing agents are used, and alkaline earth carbonates, in particular calcium carbonate, and silicon carbide. As a result, a number of advantages are achieved which: individually and in particular in their entirety could not be achieved with the known methods. So z. For example, the formation of too large a loss-making amount of slag is avoided (see equation i) or the use of expensive starting materials, such as silicon, is dispensed with (see equation i and ¢). A particular advantage of the process is that the reduction can be carried out without coal, and also in the use of cheap calcium carbonate as the starting product. This eliminates the need to burn lime and store the quick lime, and the carbonic acid of the carbonates can also be converted into calorically valuable carbon monoxide.
Another advantage of the @ method is that, the reduction
runs smoothly and regularly in the electric furnace, so that only low evaporation losses
arise, whereby the yields increase and the energy consumption compared to the
known method is reduced.
C 03) etwa i 65 kg Siliciumcarbid (etwa 9q.% SiC, 3% SiO2, i% freier C, 2% Verunreinigungen)
Calciumsilicid. The process is carried out in the well-known @electric flame or resistance furnaces
executed. When using limestone (Calciumcarbona.t) you can - from briquetting
Refrain from starting materials, as the rock is hard enough for this purpose. at
Precipitated carbonates, on the other hand, are pressed together with binders such as potato flour
or water glass, required. The precipitated carbonates are so fine that one is labeled
Mixture can lead to unpleasant malfunctions and considerable material losses
which is the case with the expensive carbonates, mostly available only in the precipitated state
of barium and strontium would not be acceptable. Example In an electrode furnace,
as used for the production of calcium carbide or ferrosilicon alloys
Is applied, a mixture, which on Zoo kg of limestone (about 98% approx
C 03) about i 65 kg silicon carbide (about 9q.% SiC, 3% SiO2, i% free C, 2% impurities)
contains, introduced in crushed and well mixed form and at a stove voltage
between 35 and 50 volts. brought to melt. The reduction is regular
and smooth. The amperage - is about 10,000 to 12,000 amps, and the achieved
Temperatures range between 2000 and 2500 ° C. After the reaction has ended
the melt is tapped. The alloy obtained has a composition
from 3o to 35% calcium and 65 to 6o% silicon in addition to small amounts of impurities,
like iron, aluminum and carbon. On Zoo kg of limestone you get about 100 kg
Calcium silicide.
