Made of rubber, gutta-percha or balata and polystyrene For laying as underwater cables
two types of cables are used, which differ in terms of isolation from one another
differ fundamentally. One type of cable is based on land cables and
has the usual paper lead jacket insulation, while the other type of cable, the
mainly used for deep sea cables, with a thermoplastic material
is isolated. The cables, which are insulated with thermoplastic materials, show consistently
poorer dielectric values than the paper-insulated cables. The endeavor of
Technology is therefore going to find ways to isolate with thermoplastic materials
Improve cables with regard to their dielectric properties. The best
So far, the so-called paragutta, a mixture of, has brought success in this regard

of about 2.63 (compared to about 3 with gutta-percha) at aoo Hertz, 3 ° and 40o Atm.

Tests have shown that one can use thermoplastic insulating materials
even better values of the dielectric constants can be obtained by using the dielectric
uses very useful rubber to build up the insulation to the greatest possible extent.
One difficulty is that rubber is not thermoplastic such as e.g.
B. gutta-percha or balata, and that above all the one raised on the ladders
unvulcanized rubber is not dimensionally stable, so that the conductor of the wire already
the absolutely necessary central position shortly after pressing around with rubber
does not maintain.
in demselben Mengenverhältnis vormischen.
Guttaperchazusatz. It is already known that for the production of an insulating compound for
Submarine cables with a high rubber content with the least possible addition of hardening substances
the polymerization products of styrene are suitable, especially if they, like the
Substance sold under the name Trolitul, good electrical properties
have (tgb approximately = 2. io-4). However, it is not recommended to use the polystyrene,
as it has been done so far, directly with the rubber previously mixed with wax
to mix, since this would have to be heated to such high temperatures (100 to
i2o °) that a decomposition of the rubber is to be feared, by its electrical
and mechanical properties are deteriorated. But if you do without that
Use of excessively high temperatures when mixing the
Rubber
with the polystyrene, there is a risk that the mixture will not be sufficiently homogeneous
becomes and segregates againL: _ According to the invention, therefore, a premix is first carried out
made of polystyrene and GuttapegaWä and then with the chew, school
mixed with the rubber at the lowest possible temperature, so that none
Impairment of the nature of the rubber occurs. The mix can
small amounts of water-resistant waxes can also be added. Already additives
from 100/0 polystyrene and 150/0 gutta-percha to rubber make it so thermoplastic
and dimensionally stable, so that it can be processed like gutta-percha on tourniquets.
The dielectric constant of the mixture is about 2.43 at 2ooo Hertz (compared to
2.63 in Paragutta). A wire insulated with the new substance has the same
Dimensions have a much smaller capacity than a Paragutta vein while
the derivative is roughly the same. The hardness of the insulating material corresponds approximately
that of gutta-percha. You can also use polystyrene with balata instead of gutta-percha
Premix in the same proportion. The composition of this premix
with rubber results in a substance with at least as good properties as with
Gutta-percha addition.
niedrige Temperatur von etwa go °.
It has also been proposed to use thermoplastic electrical insulating materials
for submarine cables to be manufactured in such a way that the rubber is about 6o0 / 0 liquid
Styrene is added and the mixture is heated to 100 to 125 ° C. for several days
the styrene polymerizes to polystyrene. This method has the disadvantage that the
Quality of the rubber due to the long-term heating to high temperatures
suffers. In contrast, to produce the insulating material according to the invention
only;, a 1 to @ 2 hour heating of the rubber. to the ---- `relative
low temperature of about go °. It is possible to use the dielectric
to keep high-quality rubber in the mixture large (about 76 ° / 0), so that one
an insulated core according to the invention can address as a rubber core, which
differs from the known rubber cores in that the rubber
is not vulcanized.
The mixtures according to the invention also do not require any time-consuming
and cost-causing intermediate or follow-up treatment and are immediately after
Mixing the individual components together ready for use.
