Description
KAISERLICHES /ι IMPERIAL / ι
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The present innovation does not only apply to ordinary lathes, such as freehand and support resp. Lead screw lathes, but also on turret lathes, boring lathes, on all kinds of lathes.
Hitherto the management of the moving parts of a lathe has been carried out by an association causes flat surfaces inclined to one another. Owned by the support lathes the cheek pieces, as can be seen from the lathe bed shown in cross section in FIG. 1 is, usually five such faces, of which the top face is in connection with the two inner vertical surfaces for guiding the spindle and tailstock, the The upper surface with the two outer inclined surfaces, on the other hand, is used to guide the support serves.
In order for a lathe to deliver accurate work, it must:
ι. alle fünf Flächen genau eben,ι. all five surfaces exactly even,
2. ihre Schnittlinien sowohl unter einander als auch mit den Spindelachsen parallel und2. their lines of intersection both with each other and with the spindle axes parallel and
3. die Stöcke und Supportschlitten den bezüglichen Führungen genau angepafst sein, welche Bedingungen zum Theil, namentlich wenn die Führungen zu schleifsen beginnen, sehr schwer oder gar nicht zu erfüllen sind.3. the sticks and support sledges must be precisely adapted to the relevant guides, what conditions in part, especially when the guides begin to grind, are very difficult or impossible to meet.
The purpose of the present innovation is to ensure the accuracy of the lathes from the correctness to make only one guide surface dependent and thereby the construction of the Lathe not only significantly simplify, but also at the same time the guides one to give increased accuracy and durability.
In cross-section, the guide surface appears as an arc of a circle, the center of which lies in the apex line projecting as point m (FIG. 5). The guide surfaces of the spindle and tailstock as well as the support slide are turned to the same radius as is shown in FIG. 4 for a tailstock. In order to limit the lateral movements of the movable parts and to enable them to be fastened to the lathe bed, the latter also has vertical guide surfaces bb, Fig. 2, between the cheeks, and the movable parts are provided with corresponding projections b 1 . But it is easily understandable that the accuracy of the position of the two sticks is completely independent of the condition of the lateral guides mentioned, because the lateral movements made possible by imperfect or loose lateral guidance take place on a circle whose center lies in the top line of the lathe , the spindles of the sticks remain immovable, and for the same reason a tool fixed in the support of such a lathe always remains at the same distance from the axis or top line of the lathe, so that the accuracy of the objects machined on such a lathe in
The prerequisite here, however, is that the parts which can be moved on the bed are kept constantly in proper surface contact with the bed. With hand lathes, this condition is always met during work, since with these lathes the headstock, tailstock and support or template are firmly connected to the bed while turning. In such lathes, the inner boundary surfaces bb of the bed (Fig. 2) and of the projections b 1 , Fig. 4, of the movable parts can, with sufficient clearance, remain completely unmachined without impairing the accuracy of the lathe in the least. In the case of lead screw and similar automatically acting lathes, however, this only applies to the sticks; the support respectively. The slide, on the other hand, must in this case have a safe and steady movement in the longitudinal direction of the lathe, even during work and under the chisel pressure. In the case of light, automatic lathes, this is expediently achieved by the arrangement shown in cross-section and longitudinal section in FIGS. The slide s has a projection that fits between the cheeks and is kept in close contact with the guide surface of the lathe by a leaf spring screwed to this projection / of suitable tension, which carries a pair of friction rollers rr at its ends. With this arrangement, machining of the inner guide surfaces bb of the bed and the projections b l of the movable parts is not absolutely necessary, but is to be preferred in order to achieve an easy, smooth movement of the slide. With heavy lathes, however, a spring of normal dimensions might not be sufficient to withstand the chisel pressure. In such cases, the cheeks and the slide must be provided with a well-machined dovetail guide, as the cross-section in FIG. 3 shows, the cheeks thus being equipped with inclined inner surfaces cc .
The arrangement of the side guides can of course be modified in many ways, without the idea on which the invention is based, namely the use of the cylindrical shape for the main guide surface finds its expression to deviate. The constructions described in detail above are, however, the simplest, easiest to do and most general to use.
