KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMTPATENT OFFICE
PATENTSCHRIFTPATENT LETTERING
KLASSE 51: Musikalische Instrumente.CLASS 51: Musical instruments.
Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 21. April 1891 ab.Patented in the German Empire on April 21, 1891.
B. Patentschrift No. 1741 3). In order to facilitate the tuning of string instruments, it has been suggested that the usual To provide pegs with worms, which are in engagement with helical gears that are perpendicular to the strings arranged clamping spigots are attached, around which the ends of the strings are wound (cf. z. B. Patent No. 1741 3). However, this facility should not have proven itself since in the arrangement described in that patent specification that for receiving the tuning device the housing is not sufficiently tight and secure with the head of the instrument connect. But this is absolutely necessary because the tension of the strings is transferred to the head through the intermediary of that housing and the loosening of the Housing would result in a detuning of the instrument. The side walls of the head cannot, as before, be used to take up the train because due to the hollowing out of the head required for the case, especially in the case of violins, are too weak. Another disadvantage of that institution is to be found in it be that the end pegs of the vertebrae are held by washers, which are place directly on the outer surface of the wooden head and thus the same at the Handling of the vertebrae wear out, which in the case of valuable instruments has serious consequences can be accompanied. These deficiencies are eliminated in the present arrangement by that the housing for receiving the tuning pegs in a corresponding recess of the head is arranged in such a way that it is held sufficiently large with its End face rests against the massive part of the head, while its wedge-shaped the other end lies in a corresponding depression below the worm, so that the string pulls from the massive part of the head /
The further stated deficiency of the older institution is due to a corresponding one Reshaping the vertebrae lifted.
The device can easily be attached to existing instruments without any problem one needs to run the risk of damaging them during installation or handling will.
In the accompanying drawing, FIG. 1 shows the head of one with the new tuning device provided violin shown in front view.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 3 is a cross section; Fig. 4 shows the housing in Front view and Fig. 5 is a side view of the same.
For each string a tensioning pin d is provided which is perpendicular to the plane of the strings, while the pegs C are arranged in the same way as the pegs customary up to now, to which the strings were directly attached. The vertebrae C are provided with screw threads 10 which engage in correspondingly designed worm wheels 11 of the pin d.
Der Kopf A1 des A light metal housing I made of aluminum or another light but resistant metal is used to support the pins and the vertebrae. The head A 1 of the
Instrument is provided with a recess corresponding to the housing, which at the upper end at χ below the worm still ends in a cut to accommodate the upper end of the housing, while the lower end of the same is located near the saddle 4, over which the Strings run against the massive part of the head. As a result of this arrangement, the string tension exerted on the pin d is transmitted directly to the head of the instrument in a completely safe manner through the intermediary of the housing / at y , while the upper tip of the housing, pushed into the incision χ of the head below the worm, the same in its position secures. A further securing can be achieved by the screw 14. The cover 5 and the side walls 6 of the housing are expediently made from one piece, while the base 7 is connected to the side walls 6 by screws or in some other suitable manner.
As can be seen from Fig. 1 of the drawing, two of the pins d come on one side, two on the other side of the housing, and the G and A strings are wound in the opposite direction as the D and E strings, see above that the strings run from their respective tenons in a straight line to the saddle 4 without coming into contact with any other tenon. The turning of the pegs C when tuning the strings takes place in this way exactly as with the pegs that have been customary up to now. The weight of the metal housing is outweighed by the weight of the wood, which is now unnecessary, so that there is no increase in weight.
The vertebrae C externally have the same shape as the vertebrae previously used; inside the housing, however, they are mounted in the side walls of the same. The metal shaft of the vertebrae expediently extends into the handle made of ivory, hard rubber or a similar material with a square. A ring placed close to the housing then firmly connects the handle and the shaft to one another. The hole for the vertebra in one side wall 6 must be large enough to allow the screw thread 10 to pass through. The hole on the other side of the housing is smaller and the pin end of the vertebra passing through it is provided with a washer 9 and screw nut 8. The washer extends through the wood of the head, lies directly against the side wall 6 of the housing and is expediently attached to a square extension of the peg so that the nut 8 cannot loosen when the peg is turned. The nut itself can be covered by a cap 13 made of hard rubber or a similar material in order to give the vertebra the appearance of an ordinary vertebra. By tightening or loosening the nut 8 one can change the friction of the vertebrae as desired. Since the washer 9 is only supported against the side wall 6 of the metal housing, the head wall can never be injured when handling the vertebra.
The metal housing I is expediently made a little wider at the top than at the bottom, so that it can be pressed firmly into the recess in the head. On the inner side of the recess, as can be seen from FIG. 3, side strips 12 can also be attached, so that the metal housing is held firmly in place. The housing is expediently completely sealed by its cover plate 5 in order to prevent the ingress of dust and impurities, while the side surfaces and the lower side can be perforated in order to save as much weight as possible.
