Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMTPATENT OFFICE
The invention relates to a method for producing mirrors and reflectors for optical both, and for a wide variety of other uses, in particular of those mirrors that require a precisely and regularly shaped mirror surface, it does not matter whether they are supposed to be flat, hollow or raised.
One proceeds in the manufacture of mirrors or reflectors for optical instruments usually in such a way that the surface of the is used as a base for the actual mirror surface grinds and polishes a certain piece of glass with the greatest accuracy to the desired curvature, then also polishes the glass surface Silver coats and finally polishes the outer surface of the silver.
This production method, however, requires very skilled workers, which increases the manufacturing costs for such mirrors or reflectors are very increased.
In the present invention, the production of the mirror is done in such a way that the reflective metal layer its polish and the required curvature by a meticulous elaborated and polished form, in which the reflective metal layer is pleasing in order to be removed from it afterwards by placing them in the form on a Base of cement or other plastic material attached, which is the design conforms to the metal layer and the shape and then hardens, so that the metal layer is attached to it sticks and can be removed with the pad. The shape becomes ordinary made of glass and used in the manufacture of glass lenses or glass mirrors usual way, according to the shape to be given to the outer mirror surface, precisely worked out and neatly polished, whereby of course for a mirror of sublime Surface the shape of a recessed and vice versa for a concave mirror a raised one must. The surface of the mold is then provided with a coating of silver by one drops this out of a solution in the usual way. The silver layer obtained in this way by clinging to the highly polished surface of the form that is through the latter required the exact shape and smoothness of the mirror surface to be achieved.
The aforementioned base can also consist of a generally the outer shape of the Mirror appropriately shaped solid mass, for example from a cast piece of glass, exist, being between the metal layer in the mold and the solid base introduces a plastic mass through which the metal layer is attached to the base and any unevenness in the latter are compensated for, while the plastic Mass adapts exactly to the surface shape to be given to the mirror surface.
Man kann auch die spiegelnde Metallschicht vorher dadurch etwas verstärken, dafs man auf der in der Form liegenden Silberschicht in der nachstehend genauer zu beschreibenden Weise einen Niederschlag von Kupfer fällt, der indessen möglichst dünn sein mufs, da er nur den Zweck hat, die Poren der Silberschicht gewissermafsen auszufüllen und zu überdecken, so dafs der später aufgebrachte Cement sichThe reflective metal layer can also be strengthened a little beforehand by opening it the silver layer lying in the mold in the manner to be described in more detail below a precipitate of copper falls, which, however, must be as thin as possible, since it is only has the purpose of filling and covering the pores of the silver layer to a certain extent, so that the later applied cement is
nicht durch die Silberschicht hindurcharbeiten und etwa die äufsere Spiegelfläche zerstören kann.do not work through the silver layer and destroy the outer mirror surface can.
If the copper precipitate on the back side of the silver layer on electroforming If paths are to be created, the form must be applied before the silver layer is filled in it the edges are prepared so that the electrolyte does not get between the silver and the shape can penetrate. For this purpose you can use the shape on the outer edge either with a slightly roughened surface, similar to that of frosted glass or brush the same with paraffin.
In the drawing, FIG. 1 shows a sectional view a form suitable for the production of a concave mirror, while in a corresponding one Sectional view (FIG. 2) shows the form with the metal layer located thereon and the base attached to it. 3 illustrates, in section, the finished mirror removed from the mold, while FIG Fig. 4 in top view the shape with the for the precipitation of a precipitate on the Reverse side of the silver layer inside shows prepared edges.
The precipitation of the precipitate by electroforming is illustrated by a sectional view (Fig. 5) clarifies, while Fig. 6 illustrates a finished mirror in section, whose base consists entirely of cement.
The shape α is expediently made of the hardest flint glass, while the surface α 2 , which is opposite in shape to that of the mirror to be made and which is intended here as a raised curved surface, is precisely regularly worked and polished. b denotes the metal coating to be formed chemically by precipitation from a solution on the mold, for which silver is usually used.
If this silver layer is to be reinforced by precipitating a second metal layer, the edges of the mold are prepared for this in the manner illustrated at a 3 , FIG. As indicated in FIG. 5, a copper deposit can be deposited on the silver layer by electroplating without the electrolyte penetrating at the edges between the silver layer and the glass mold.
The supporting base for the metal layer can either consist entirely of any suitable plastic material that will harden later, as in c, Fig Plate d, FIGS. 2 and 3, consist for example of a piece of pressed glass, the side of which facing the metal layer is almost modeled on the mirror surface, and on the other hand of a layer of cement c connecting the metal layer and the underlying glass plate.
As a suitable material for such a base without special reinforcement or also as an intermediate layer to connect the rigid plate with. the metal layer has become Shellac works well, but any other suitable material can be used will.
After the plastic material on the metal layer has hardened in the mold, the whole can be taken out of the latter, the metal layer being a the inside of the shape corresponding smooth mirror surface forms on the base.
The mirrors produced in this way can be used in a wide variety of scientific fields or other uses or as reflectors or as a substitute for the previously common glass mirrors are used, in which the light before it falls on the The actual mirror surface is falling, a layer of glass must penetrate, and are in the process of being manufactured far cheaper than this. For various purposes, except for certain optical purposes, one can use the mirror surface by a covering of transparent firnif from the outside air protection.
In addition to the production of mirror surfaces of any shape, the above is suitable Process in particular also for the production of objective micrometers, which up to now have been produced in such a way that a piece of mirror metal was provided with fine lines on its surface, which are therefore very were costly.
In order to manufacture the objective micrometer according to the present method, one uses such a lined surface in the same way as described above with reference to the shape α , and in this way the fine lines can be drawn by falling one metal layer after the other on such a plate, duplicate in any number of replicas from a single such plate.
It has already been proposed to manufacture reflectors in such a way that one a thin layer of silver falls in a mold and this silver layer on electroforming Ways with a second precipitation from an inferior metal and such Strength ensures that this is sufficient to give the mirror to be produced in this way to give necessary strength. However, this method of production has proven to be inexpedient proven because a precipitate of the required strength will make the mirror too heavy
Andererseits war diese Herstellungsweise für die Anfertigung von gewöhnlichen Reflectoren zu kostspielig.the ran, and this as a result of the temperature changes or with uneven heating, the expansion and contraction of the metal distorted, so that it became unusable for optical purposes. On the other hand, this production method was for making ordinary reflectors too expensive.
