Piston machine of the closed design With piston machines for the.
The closed design with closed on all sides is used for the most varied of purposes
Cylinder and crankcase preferred. This embodiment doesn't just come in
Question for the prime movers, i.e. the steam piston engine and the internal combustion engine,
but also for the 'working machines that promote elastic means, i.e. piston blowers
and reciprocating compressors for vapors, gases and gas mixtures. "As a result of the close assembly
Difficulties arise from the cylinder and crankcase not only because of the heat flow
from the working cylinder to the crankcase, but above all because of the fact that
careful sealing between those rooms where the working bait
Propellant is contained, and the engine rooms, which should only contain lubricating oil,
difficult is possible .. parts of the propellant get despite carefully trained
Seals in the crankcase, mix with the lubricating oil, that, thereby
loses its lubricity and attack the engine parts. Also the arrangement
of carefully. trained piston rod glands in crosshead machines
can not prevent; da.'ß parts of the working or propellant with .der back and forth
coming piston rod get into those rooms that are kept cool
and should only be accessible for lubricating oil. According to the invention, a clean
Separation between the hot working or propellant part, i.e. the cylinder part,
and the cooler part of the engine, i.e. the crankcase, caused
that the working or propellant residues passing from one to the other through
a flush acting by buoyancy can be flushed out of the housing. For the
The flushing effect is not a special source of power, but the buoyancy of the hot vapors
or gases are used. The space between the cylinder and the crankcase becomes chimney-like
open at the top and also at the bottom by sufficiently wide, appropriately distributed
Openings connected to the atmosphere. The hot vapors or gases may increase
their buoyancy upwards and suck through it. cold air from the engine room
after. The chimney-like opening upwards can be arranged so that the
gases or vapors flowing through are heated by radiation from the cylinder.
The buoyancy or pulling effect is thereby increased.
Dampfmaschine dargestellt. In Abb. i sind die Dampfzylinder einfach, in Abb.2. doppelt
wirkend eingerichtet.

In the embodiment example is the application of the subject matter of the invention
in Fig. i on a two-cylinder and in Fig. 2 on a single, or multi-cylinder
Steam engine shown. In fig. I the steam cylinders are simple, in fig. 2. double
acting furnished. The partition between the cylinder housing a and the crankcase

takes place in both machines of the closed design through the stuffing box sec. Below
This stuffing box contains the engine parts that are to be kept cool
and may only come into contact with lubricating oil. In the space below the stuffing box
c now, despite this, the moving piston causes the water and steam parts to get through
Carry heat with them and get to the engine parts. The water particles
have high temperatures and partly evaporate when leaving the room
higher pressure in the lower pressure space. This haze is reflected in the cool ones
Areas below the stuffing box, e.g. B. the piston rod, down again and arrives
despite the stuffing box-like barrier, finally to the engine parts and to the
Mix with the lubricating oil.
According to the invention, this is prevented by the fact that by attaching the openings d and the mostly vertical tubes e, a flushing effect is created, through which the hot and humid contents of the space below the stuffing box c with the steam and the vapor are discharged upwards through e is replaced by dry cool air flowing in through d. Flushing takes place through the - buoyancy, the chimney effect. The indoor air, heated by the hot steam and vapor, flows continuously through the chimney and sucks in fresh, cool air through the openings d. This creates effective cooling of the crankcase and the crank mechanism at the same time as the propellant residues are removed.
To prevent dust from entering, Fig. I shows both inlet openings
d, which can be distributed over the entire circumference: can, nor the sieves i arranged.
The stuffing box c is provided with outlets t and supplemented by - the plate g,
which are housed on the piston rod, especially when starting up
collecting water - to be discharged to the outside, from where it can escape through the drains
can. The riser pipe e is in Fig. I at its upper end by a nozzle-shaped
Extension added. In this the rising steam-air mixture is delayed
and thereby a small negative pressure compared to the atmosphere in the riser pipe e itself
and generated in the space below, which increases the flushing effect.
In a similar way, the invention can be applied to all types of piston engines,
thus also with crossheadless steam engines, with internal combustion engines
Piston blowers and calving compressors for gas and steam.
