Process for matting glasses When matting glasses with
fluorine-containing etching baths can often be observed that an etch that occurs in a
'Glass of a certain composition creates an excellent' matt effect
with another glass only causes inadequate matting or even fails completely.
In such cases one is forced to determine the etching bath composition purely empirically
change and make time-consuming experiments. until it is more or less random
sets the desired matt effect.
The invention aims at different commercially available glasses
Composition to achieve usable matting with one and the same etch.
For this purpose, according to the invention, the fluorine-containing etching bath, which is known in
Way may contain ammonium fluoride and hydrofluoric acid, in addition, ammonium silicofluoride
added, up to complete or almost complete saturation.
It is known that when using etching baths, which
contain ammonium fluoride in addition to aqueous hydrofluoric acid, due to the action of hydrofluoric acid
on the glass and others also forms ammonium silicofluoride. so that the etch after a certain
Use time also contains ammonium silicofluoride. For the matt effect to be created
However, the formation of the aminonium silicofluoride has not played a major role so far,
because the salt has a considerable solubility and considering the formed
small amount in the etching bath goes into solution. This dissolving of the etching process
Forming ammonium silicofluoride is now avoided according to the invention because the application
Finding etches from the start with ammonium silicofluoride up to saturation
or is enriched almost to saturation. But this has the consequence that the
ammonium silicofluoride formed during the etching process in connection with the already
Ammonium silicofluoride which is abundant in the etch immediately forms protective crystals,
which settle in an even and good distribution on the glass surface.
The following is an example of an etching bath according to the invention: 100 parts by weight
2% hydrofluoric acid, 35 parts by weight ammonium fluoride, 15 parts by weight barium stilfate,
5 parts by weight ammonium silicofluoride. In the above composition they are sufficient
mentioned 5 parts by weight of ammonium silicofluoride at normal bath temperature to complete
Saturation of the bath; the barium sulphate is used, as is often the case with etching baths,
to influence the viscosity of the bath.
