hatte.Process for the production of water glass When processing alumina
and siliceous rocks, e.g. B. clays, bauxite and the like, on aluminum and
its compounds with acids or acidic or acid-releasing substances or chlorine
and the like. Large amounts of silica are obtained, for which there has been no use up to now
would have.
z. B. von Bauxit mit Chlor und Kohlenoxyd oder von Leucit, Phonolith, Nephelin,
Feldspat, Schlakken mittels Säuren erhaltenen Rückstände in Betracht.
It has now been found that the silicic acid-containing masses used in
Digestion of rocks and earths containing aluminum, e.g. B. with or without the addition of salts,
such as calcium chloride, calcined clays, using temperatures above 100 °
for processing on aluminum or its compounds without blowdown or
after sludging of finer parts are obtained as residues, by means of alkali easily
can be processed on water glass. In particular, the

present process a great economic advance is achieved because
the previously worthless products can now be obtained in a technically usable form,
which lowers the cost price of aluminum. The processing of the example

possibly in the presence of superheated steam or smoke gases, under any

The solution is best in such a way that the residues are thorough, if necessary in the

in the warmth and with good mechanical work-through, if necessary under pressure,

Beispiel i - ioo Gewichtsteile

Si02 20,98 %, A1203 0,49 %, Fe203 o,o6 %, Ti02 0,02 %, Ca0 o,o3 %, Na20 7,33

(s. z. B. U 11-m a n n, Enzyklopädie der technischen Chemie, 1922, Bd. i i, S. 219-220)
This material consisted of pure silica with the exception of a small amount of unused earth. From this known process it could not be inferred that the residues obtainable at temperatures above 100 ° without sludging or after sludging of finer parts, which contain up to 50% undigested clay substance, likewise give an excellent water glass. This product has the same composition as a water glass obtained by processing the fine fractions obtained by the elutriation of the clay residues. EXAMPLE 100 parts by weight (= 86 parts by weight of dry substance) of a thoroughly washed moist clay residue of gray-white color and of up to about 10 ° obtained in the manufacture of alumina by digestion of calcined clay using hydrochloric acid at 105 to 120 °, preferably by the process of patent 538615 mm grain size, which consists mainly of hydric silicic acid and also contains alumina, titanium and iron oxide, are heated with 15o parts by weight of 16% sodium hydroxide solution with thorough stirring at normal pressure and obtained for 2 hours at low boiling, where appropriate the amount of liquid evaporating is replaced by the temporary addition of fresh water or the introduction of steam. About 5o to 6o% of the dry clay residue is broken down. The filtrate obtained during the filtration of the thin-bodied mass using a vacuum or increased pressure is a clear, light-colored, durable water glass solution with a specific gravity of 1.25 to 1.33, which contains about 3 mol of SiO 2 per 1 mol of Na 2 O. The composition is as follows: Si02 20.98 %, A1203 0.49%, Fe203 0.06%, Ti02 0.02%, Ca0.03%, Na20 7.33%, Cl 0.28 0/0 - example e A clay residue obtained according to example i, which contains grains up to about iomm diameter, of which about 10 percent by weight of fine constituents that are able to pass through a sieve of 100 meshes / cm2, is placed in a sludge plant (see e.g. U 11-mann, Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 1922, Vol. Ii, pp. 219-220) slurried with water while stirring. The cloudiness, which is darkly colored by carbonaceous and colloidal constituents, is replaced by fresh water that continues to flow in, whereby the clay residue takes on a lighter color. The worthless pulp that runs off passes through a sieve of goo meshes / cm2 and carries about 2 to 5% of the finer parts of the residue with it. The sludge residue is processed in the manner indicated in Example i on water glass, which is distinguished by its particularly light color.
