Process for the production of metal coatings on filaments and others
Bodies It is known to have metal coatings of difficult-to-melt metals on other bodies
manufacture by placing these bodies in a vaporous atmosphere
Compounds of the metal to be deposited are heated.
The invention relates to the use of a similar method
for the production of threads and other bodies made of rhenium metal. especially from
electrical incandescent bodies consisting entirely or in part of rhenium, such as those used for
electric incandescent lamps, vacuum tubes, electric arc lamps and for similar purposes
to be needed. The process now consists in getting an easily dissociable
and readily vaporizable rhenium compound, e.g. B. rhenium hexachloride or rhenium heptachloride,
evaporates and passes over a heated surface. It then separates on the heated one
Surface is made up of a homogeneous, metallically shiny layer of rhenium metal. If
keeps this layer glowing for a long time and conducts the chloride vapors of the rhenium over it,
so the layer gradually becomes stronger and stronger.
Homogeneous bodies made of rhenium metal are used for many technical purposes
of considerable importance. Rhenium has a very high melting point. The melting point
is about the same height as that of tungsten, probably even higher. rhenium
but has the advantage over tungsten that it is much less when heated in a vacuum
more easily atomized or vaporized than the tungsten. It can therefore be much higher
Temperatures are heated as tungsten without the disturbances occurring
the. when heating the tungsten are known. That is why rhenium is particularly suitable
good for electric incandescent bodies for all purposes where there is a need to achieve high levels
Temperatures matters, and both the rhenium metal can lead to such incandescent bodies
alone as well as in connection with other difficult-to-melt metals, especially
with tungsten. It is enough to do one on a tungsten filament
to apply a thin layer of rhenium in order to considerably improve the tungsten filament
to achieve. Such rhenium-coated tungsten filaments are useful for many purposes
Also preferable for the reason that pure rhenium is quite expensive.
In order to obtain incandescent bodies, which mainly consist of rhenium,
the procedure according to the invention is such that a thin thread made of a base metal, e.g.
B. of platinum or tungsten, in a container by passing an electrical
Stromes heated and at the same time with vapors an easily decomposable in the heat
chemical
Binding of the rhenium is enveloped. Then hits
These vapors produce metallic rhenium on the glowing, platinum or tungsten wire
low. This process is continued until a rhenium body is removed from the
desired strength is achieved. By regulating the temperature and the supply of rhenium-containing
Vapors make it possible to obtain very even threads in this way. Takes
for example, a tungsten thread with a diameter of 0.02 mm and prepared
as indicated in an atmosphere containing vapors of rhenium compounds, to
if it has reached a diameter of 0.2 mm, the tungsten core only makes about
i% of the total mass of the thread.
The vapors from which the rhenium is deposited on the glowing wire
can, for example, from a mixture of chlorine compounds of rhenium
exist. Mainly the hexachloride and the heptachloride come into consideration.
The vapors can be generated by keeping these compounds in a solid state
Brings into a glass flask that is holding the container in which the wire is made to glow
is connected. The glass flask is carefully heated with a gas flame
or otherwise, the vapors will immediately develop and enter the container
one in which the glowing wire is located. There come for the glowing wire
Temperatures between iooo and i 600 "C are considered. The decomposition itself
Forming gases are sucked off with a pump. It is best to go through the pump
at the same time keeping the pressure in the container low. To prevent the undecomposed
Rhenium compounds get into the pump, it is advisable to place between the container,
in which the glowing wire is, and the pump a well-cooled template
in which the rhenium-like vapors are reflected. Instead of the chlorides
of the rhenium in the solid state: and to be brought into the glass flask, as described above
one can also proceed in such a way that one brings rhenium metal into the (., glass flask
and chlorine gas passes over it. The chlorides of the are then formed in the glass flask
Rheniums. If this glass bulb is heated at the same time, the chlorides mix
in vapor form join the flow of excess chlorine and come together with it
into the container in which the wire is made to glow.
h und i
befinden.
Such an arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawing. At a, the chlorine gas enters tube b, which widens at c. The rhenium d is located in the piston c. If the flask c is moderately heated by a heat source c, the vapors of chlorides of rhenium mix with the flow of chlorine. The mixture enters the container at f, in which there are two very fine tungsten threads h and i . These are made to glow by passing an electric current through the electrodes k and L. Then rhenium is deposited evenly on the threads from the gas and vapor mixture. The chlorine gas enters the pipe m that leads to the pump. Once the rhenium layer has obtained the desired thickness, the container g can serve as an incandescent lamp bell. The pipe b is then melted off at f , the container g is evacuated through the pipe m, and this pipe m is finally also melted off.
