Description
Process for the purification of impure titanium dioxide, in particular titanium dioxide containing oxy-gen In the hydrolytic cleavage of titanium solutions for the purpose of precipitating titanium dioxide pulls this, present impurities with it from the solutions. These impurities are harmful to titanic acid as soon as they become the pure, white color of titanium dioxide affect. While it is relatively easy to meet conditions, in order to precipitate the titanium dioxide as free of iron oxides as possible, the titanium dioxide has such an absorption capacity compared to other colored oxides present in small quantities, and on the other hand these colored oxides cause the titanium dioxide to be so strongly colored, that in the presence of these colored oxides only unsightly titanium dioxide is obtained. In addition to vanadium, copper and manganese, the chromium is the oxide that gives the Titanium dioxide most affected.
In order to clean such chromium-containing titanium dioxide, one proceeds as follows: that the titanium dioxide with a small amount of caustic alkali, alkali carbonate o. Like. Added or a titanium dioxide still containing acid with an excess of caustic alkali, alkali carbonate, magnesium oxide, barium oxide etc. previously dried mixture glows. You can see the process of oxidation accelerate the chromium oxide to chromate by adding oxidizing agents. That Annealed product is ground and washed to remove it from alkali and alkali chromate and possibly other soluble salts. The last still on the titanium dioxide Any residues of alkali that may have adhered can be subsequently removed by adding acids or other neutralizing salts, e.g. B. aluminum sulfate, zinc sulfate, neutralized and rendered harmless. Finally, the purified titanium dioxide is dried and possibly mixed with other white pigments.
