Der Borkehobel besteht aus einem eisernen Hauptblech B, welches die Form eines in der Längsrichtung segmentförmig gebogenen Parallelogramms hat; es dient in erster Linie zur Führung des an ihm befestigten Schnittmessers 5¹. Die zugeschärfte kürzere Kante k des Bleches ist pflugartig nach innen und aufsen gebogen und hat den Zweck, dann in Wirkung zu treten, wenn der zu röthende Stamm zu stark ist und nicht mehr der Biegung des Bleches B entspricht, so dafs dabei das Schnittmesser S nicht mehr die Borke fassen kann; bei schwächeren Stämmen bleibt die Schneide k aufser Function. Die längere zugeschärfte Kante K dient zum Abschlagen von hinderlichen Quirlästen. Beide Schneiden sind verstählt. Die zweite, kürzere Seite des Bleches B hat einen circa 2 cm breiten Ausschnitt A, über welchem das Schnittmesser 5 genau passend aufgenietet oder durch Schrauben befestigt ist. Das Schnittmesser kann auch derart befestigt sein, dafs es leicht lösbar oder verstellbar gegen das Führungsblech angebracht ist, um ein leichteres Schleifen zu ermöglichen oder die Stärke des abzuhebenden Borkeringes ändern zu können. Das Schnittmesser S ist sehr wesentlich und ist aus bestem Stahl hergestellt. Um die Borke in der horizontalen Richtung leicht zu bewältigen und einen vorschriftsmäfsigen Ring am Stamme röthen zu können, ist es zunächst ein wenig gebogen, um den Ring in der Mitte etwas tiefer als an den Rändern zu schneiden; dann steht es oben mehr als unten vom Hauptblech ab.
