Abstract

The lighting unit has a free space (5) formed through an edge surface (3a) of a multi-layered, plate-shaped, transparent construction element (3) e.g. glass disk. A lamp (1) e.g. LED, is arranged and retained in the free space. The lamp is aligned with the edge surface such that light emitted by the lamp is irradiated by the edge surface and is directionally discharged via a plate surface of the construction element. The construction element is provided with a light control surface and/or a coating (3c) at a light discharge surface (3b).
