Motorbrennstoffe. Eine Reihe an sich gut wirkender flüssiger Brennstoffe für Motoren leiden, wie Petroleum und das mit Petroleum versetzte Handelsbenzin, unter dem Mißstand, daß sie hohe Verdichtungen nicht vertragen können. Bei ihrer Verwendung im Motor ergeben sich Frühzündungen, die sich durch das sogenannte Klopfen des Motors bemerkbar machen. Man hat, um diesem Mißstand zu begegn,2n, verschiedene Mittel versucht. Das Einspritzen von Wasser kann zwar das Klopfen verhindern, dabei muß man aber die Gefahr einer Verrostung von Bestandteilen des Motors mit in den Kauf nehmen. Das für den genannten Zweck benutzte Tetraäthylblei kommt infolge seiner Giftigkeit für die Praxis nicht mehr in Frage.Motor fuels. Dazu kommt, daß die hydrierten Phenole im Gegensatz zum Wasser keinen Ballaststoff für das Treibmittel vorstellen, da sie selbst als recht gut wirksame motorische Brennstoffe anzusehen sind. Man hat zwar schon den Zusatz von 2 bis 4 Prozent leicht brennbarer, hochsiedender Verbindungen der hydroaromatischen Reihe, wie hydrierte Naphthaline oder Hexahydrophenol, zu leicht flüchtigen Kohlenwasserstoffen zwecks Herabsetzung ihrer Verdunstungsgeschwindigkeit empfohlen, dabei handelt es sich jedoch um Mengen, die zwar in den genannten Fällen durchaus genügen, «-elche jedoch nicht imstande sind, ein Klopfen des Motors wirksam zu verhindern. Es zeigte sich jedoch, daß bei Wahl größerer Mengen hydrierter Phenole nicht nur der erstgenannte Effekt, sondern auch das hier erstrebte Ziel der Verhinderung von Frühzündungen vorzüglich erreicht- werden kann.
