Beträgt dann der Unterschied am Punkt i bei nahezu völliger Kompensation etwa 3° oder 3o Skalenteile, am Punkt 2 dagegen 5° oder 5o Skalenteile, so kann man, wenn der Apparat einmal geeicht worden ist, ohne weiteres in absoluten Einheiten den relativen Unterschied des Erdfeldes an beiden Orten angeben. Der Fortschritt bei diesen Verfahren gegenüber bisher bekannten beruht darauf, daß man denselben Strom durch zwei Apparate schickt, wobei Fehler durch Temperaturunterschiede völlig herausfallen. Beide Apparate müssen solid konstruiert sein, damit sich die Lage der Kompensationsspule gegen die Magnetnadel nicht verändert.
